Cowboys Reset Kicker Market with Record $28M Extension for Brandon Aubrey

Jerry Jones just backed up the truck for the most dangerous leg in football. The Dallas Cowboys and All-Pro kicker Brandon Aubrey agreed to a massive four-year, $28 million contract extension on Monday, his representatives at Athletes First confirmed. The deal officially cements Aubrey as the highest-paid kicker in NFL history.

Aubrey is the first at his position to crack the $7 million per year average, vaulting past the Kansas City Chiefs’ Harrison Butker ($6.4 million) and a recent short-lived record set by Houston’s Ka’imi Fairbairn ($6.5 million). With $20 million in total guarantees, Dallas isn’t just paying for points; they are investing in a specialist who has fundamentally changed how Mike McCarthy manages the game once the offense crosses midfield.

From the Pitch to the Record Books

The 31-year-old’s rise remains one of the most improbable stories in professional sports. Seven years ago, Aubrey was a first-round selection in the MLS draft. After his soccer career stalled in the USL, he didn’t even pick up a football until 2019. Now, he owns the NFL record for the most career field goals of 60 yards or more with six—including a monstrous 65-yard blast that still has fans in Arlington talking.

The stadium air usually goes still when a kicker steps out for a 60-yarder. Not with Aubrey. When he trots onto the turf, the crowd expects a make. He’s become a legitimate scoring threat the moment the Cowboys hit the opponent’s 45-yard line.

“That means the world,” Aubrey told reporters Monday regarding the new contract. “My next goal is to make my next kick… whether that’s an extra point or a 70-yard field goal.”

By the Numbers: Aubrey’s Historic Start

Aubrey has been a model of consistency since his 2023 debut. While his “rookie” status at age 28 raised eyebrows back then, his performance quickly silenced the skeptics. He has earned a Pro Bowl selection in each of his first three seasons, serving as a rare bright spot in the Cowboys’ special teams unit.

    Metric 2025 Season Career Totals
    Field Goals Made/Attempted 36/42 112/127
    Field Goal Percentage 85.7% 88.2%
    Extra Points Made/Attempted 47/48 126/130
    FGs of 50+ Yards 11/17 —
Career Long 64 Yards 65 Yards

    The Quest for 70 Yards

With his financial future secure through 2030, Aubrey has his sights set on more than just the record for average annual value. The NFL’s distance record currently sits at 70 yards, recently established by Jacksonville’s Cam Little. Aubrey has frequently hinted that he has the leg strength to match or exceed that mark in the right conditions.

The Cowboys spent most of the spring playing a waiting game, placing a $5.7 million second-round tender on the restricted free agent as a placeholder. Monday’s news ends that standoff, allowing the team to focus on other looming negotiations, including a franchise-tag situation with wideout George Pickens. For now, Dallas can rest easy knowing they have the league’s premier distance threat locked in for the long haul.
