Bill Belichick Makes Rare Admission: Brady Leaving the Patriots Was “Absolutely the Right Thing to Do”

Bill Belichick rarely opens the vault on his feelings about Tom Brady’s exit. This week he did exactly that.

Speaking on Fox News’ “Hang Out with Sean Hannity,” the former Patriots head coach stated plainly that Brady walking away after the 2019 season was the correct call for the quarterback. The words landed with extra force because they came from the man who built a dynasty alongside him.

“Tom leaving was absolutely the right thing for him to do,” Belichick said.

He did not soften the explanation. The 2020 Patriots simply were not built to compete at the level Brady demanded of himself.

What Belichick Actually Said

The full context matters. Belichick laid out the roster reality without hesitation.

“We didn’t have a good team in 2020. We just didn’t have a good football team,” he continued. “We had all those guys that left — Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman. Most of our team was gone. Devin McCourty and a few others were still there, but they were about to go, too. We were just at the end.”

He added that he was genuinely happy Brady found success in Tampa Bay and won another Super Bowl. “It wouldn’t have gone well in 2020 in New England. On this, I can guarantee that.”

Belichick also noted the business side. The Patriots had invested heavily in the 2019 roster and paid Brady a large sum at the end of that year with no franchise tag or right of first refusal attached. Both sides understood a departure was possible.

The 2020 Roster Reality

The numbers tell the story. After the 2019 Wild Card loss, New England lost several pillars of the previous decade. Gronkowski had already retired once. Edelman’s production had declined. The offensive line and skill positions around Brady were thin.

Brady, then 42, still wanted to play at an elite level. He signed with the Buccaneers and immediately delivered. Tampa Bay won Super Bowl LV in February 2021. Brady threw for over 5,300 yards and 43 touchdowns in 2021 alone.

Staying in New England would have meant another rebuild year with limited weapons. Brady chose a different path. Belichick now confirms that choice was sound.

A Partnership That Defined an Era

Twenty seasons together produced six Super Bowl titles. No other coach-quarterback duo has come close.

Belichick used the Hannity appearance to reflect on how they operated. He learned to see the game through a quarterback’s eyes. Brady absorbed defensive concepts and adjusted protections on the fly. The respect was mutual even when tension existed.

“Tom wasn’t a dominant personality. He was just a great leader,” Belichick said. “He would do whatever you asked him to do… He’d do whatever the team needed him to do, and he was very competitive.”

That willingness to sacrifice for the team helped fuel the run. It also made the eventual split feel inevitable once the supporting cast thinned.

Life After the Split

The Patriots went 29-38 from 2020 through 2023 with just one playoff appearance. Belichick and the organization parted ways in January 2024. Brady played three more seasons in Tampa, then retired after 2022.

Both men have since spoken with perspective. Brady has acknowledged natural tension built up over time. Belichick’s latest comments close a chapter with honesty rather than bitterness.

For fans who watched the six Super Bowl parades, the admission brings a strange comfort. The greatest run in franchise history ended the way many dynasties do — not with anger, but with the simple recognition that the window had closed.

Why These Words Carry Weight

Belichick has spent decades avoiding personal commentary on former players. He measures his public statements carefully. When he volunteers that Brady made the right decision and guarantees it would not have worked in New England, the admission stands out.

It also reinforces what many around the league already sensed in early 2020. The Patriots were entering a reset. Brady still had elite arm talent and unmatched preparation. Different paths made sense for both.

The 2026 NFL landscape looks nothing like 2019. Yet the Brady-Belichick era remains the standard. Six rings. Two Hall of Famers. One unmatched run of dominance.

Belichick’s rare candor this week simply confirmed what the record already showed: Brady left at the right moment, for the right reasons, and both sides ultimately benefited from the move.
