Cowboys Safety Markquese Bell Arrested on Felony Drug Charges

PROSPER, Texas — Dallas Cowboys safety Markquese Bell was arrested Friday night on a felony count of possession of a controlled substance and a Class B misdemeanor for possession of marijuana. Prosper police pulled him over just after 10 p.m. near Prosper Trail and Dallas Parkway. Officers smelled marijuana, conducted a search, and found less than two ounces of the drug plus a THC e-cigarette.

Arrest Rocks Cowboys’ Offseason Ahead of Draft

Bell, 27, remains in Collin County jail as of Saturday morning. The Cowboys confirmed they know about the arrest but declined further comment. This comes just weeks before the 2026 NFL Draft, when depth at safety will be a hot topic.

Bell carved out a solid role last season. He played all 17 games, started 3, and posted 41 total tackles with 20 solo, 1 tackle for loss, 1 forced fumble, 1 interception, and 3 passes defended. He signed a 3-year, $9 million extension in March 2025 after rising from undrafted free agent in 2022.

The Florida A&M product started at Coffeyville Community College before joining the Rattlers in 2019. As a senior in 2021 he racked up 95 tackles, 2 sacks, and 5 forced fumbles. Dallas picked him up as an undrafted rookie and watched him battle his way into the defensive rotation and special-teams core.

“Certainly let Markquese have his day like anybody else.” — Deiric Jackson, Bell’s agent

What Happens Next for Bell and the Cowboys

The NFL’s personal conduct policy puts Bell at risk of a fine or suspension. The felony charge carries extra weight under federal guidelines, even if the amount was small. With the 2026 season still months away, the Cowboys have time to sort this out, but the timing stings. Safety depth was already thin after a tough 2025 finish.

You could sense the organization’s caution in how quickly they shut down questions Saturday. Bell had finally locked in that extension and earned trust as a reliable backup who could fly around on special teams. His story—from JUCO to HBCU All-American to NFL contributor—had the kind of grit fans love. Now the focus shifts to court dates and league review.

Dallas will monitor the legal process closely while preparing for the draft. One thing is clear: this arrest adds another layer of uncertainty to a roster that hoped to build momentum this offseason.
