Chiefs Eye Jermod McCoy With No. 9 Pick in 2026 NFL Draft

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs sit at No. 9 overall with two first-round picks in the 2026 NFL Draft, and one name keeps surfacing in league circles: Tennessee cornerback Jermod McCoy.

McCoy Emerges as Chiefs’ Top Cornerback Target

ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller dropped the latest intel after talking to sources in Kansas City and around the league. The board remains wide open for the Chiefs at No. 9, but McCoy stands out as a hot name to watch if he slides there. The 6-foot-1, 188-pound cover man missed all of 2025 with a torn ACL, yet he answered every question at his Pro Day.

He ran a 4.37-second 40-yard dash. Scouts who watched him in person say he looks every bit the top-tier athlete they expected before the injury. Talent alone had him projected as the clear first corner off the board. Now the buzz is back.

Kansas City lost Trent McDuffie in a trade that netted them the extra first-rounder at No. 29. The secondary took another hit when L’Jarius Sneed and others moved on in free agency. Steve Spagnuolo needs a lockdown guy who can match up across the field. McCoy brings exactly that — fluid hips, elite recovery speed, and the instincts to jump routes without getting burned.

You could almost feel the tension lift in the Chiefs’ war room when word of his Pro Day workout spread. The guy from Whitehouse, Texas — same high school that produced Patrick Mahomes — just reminded everyone why he was once a consensus top-five prospect.

“I just feel like when you’re ready, you’re ready… I felt ready to come out… I made a big impact the year that I played and I just feel like I’m ready.” — Jermod McCoy, Tennessee CB

Other Directions the Chiefs Could Go at No. 9

If McCoy doesn’t make it to nine, the board still offers plenty of help. Matt Miller laid out the clear needs: offensive tackle, wide receiver, edge rusher, defensive tackle, and corner. Names like LSU’s Mansoor Delane at corner, Miami’s Francis Mauigoa at tackle, Arizona State’s Jordyn Tyson at receiver, and Miami’s Rueben Bain Jr. at edge all pop up in mock drafts tied to Kansas City.

The Chiefs will let the board fall to them. They’ve done it before — trading up or staying put to grab exactly what the roster demands. This front office doesn’t panic. They build with purpose.

What It Means for the 2026 Season and Beyond

Landing McCoy at No. 9 would give the Chiefs a potential long-term anchor opposite whoever lines up at the other corner spot. Spagnuolo’s defense thrives when it can press receivers and force quarterbacks into quick decisions. A healthy McCoy does that at an elite level.

The playoff picture stays crystal clear. Kansas City remains in the mix for another deep run in 2026. A young, dynamic corner addition shores up the back end while the offense keeps rolling with Mahomes. The draft isn’t the only move — free agency and depth signings will follow — but this pick could define the secondary for the next half-decade.

Two weeks until the draft in Pittsburgh. The phone lines in Kansas City stay quiet for now. When the clock hits nine, though, all eyes will be on whether Jermod McCoy hears his name called in Arrowhead red.
