SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers agreed to a one-year contract with free agent cornerback Jack Jones on Friday, adding a battle-tested veteran to their secondary after a smooth visit to the team facility.

Ball Hawk Lands in Bay Area with Proven Takeaway Punch

Jones, 28, joins his fourth NFL franchise after stops in New England, Las Vegas and Miami. He started all 17 games for the Dolphins in 2025 and played 980 defensive snaps — the highest share among Miami cornerbacks at 91.5 percent. He posted 77 tackles, four tackles for loss, one interception, six passes defensed and two forced fumbles.

Since the Patriots drafted him in the fourth round in 2022, Jones has appeared in 59 games with 38 starts. He sits on 213 tackles, eight interceptions and 33 passes defensed. His four interception return touchdowns rank second-most in the NFL since his debut. You could almost feel the energy shift when he turned short fields into scores — two pick-sixes in just seven games with the Raiders back in 2023.

His aggressive style delivered flashes early. As a rookie he picked off two passes in 13 games. He started 16 games in 2024 and added three more interceptions before the Dolphins gave him a full-time role last season. The 49ers see a low-risk, high-reward piece who fits defensive coordinator Raheem Morris’ press-man scheme perfectly.

“I’m excited to play in the Bay and contribute to this team every Sunday.” — Jack Jones, Cornerback

What the Signing Means for 2026 and Beyond

Jones slots in behind projected starters Deommodore Lenoir and Renardo Green. He gives the 49ers experienced depth and immediate competition as they head into the draft and training camp. Morris loves corners who press at the line and attack the football — exactly Jones’ game. The move also buys the front office flexibility; they can address other needs early in the draft without panic at corner.

Fans remember how quickly Jones made an impact wherever he landed. That same fire could spark the secondary in red and gold. The chilly spring air at the facility didn’t cool the buzz around this addition. For a team chasing another deep playoff run, Jones represents exactly the veteran insurance and takeaway threat they needed.
