FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Forget fixing the offense. The New York Jets just signaled a massive defensive overhaul. NFL.com released its latest 2026 NFL mock draft, and the Jets used their premium capital to build an absolute wall. General Manager Joe Douglas aggressively targeted the front seven and the secondary, locking in Ohio State edge rusher Arvell Reese at No. 2 overall and Tennessee cornerback Jermond McCoy at No. 16.

    Building a Monster Front

Reese brings pure terror to the trenches. He didn’t just rush the quarterback in 2025; he wrecked offensive game plans. The hybrid defender tallied 6.5 sacks and 10 tackles for loss across 14 games. You could almost feel the tension in the stadium air whenever he lined up on third down. Opposing tackles routinely false-started, panicked by his sheer explosive power off the snap.

Scouts anticipate Reese’s March 31 pro day with intense scrutiny. When he hits the turf, the grass practically tears under his cleats. If he flies through the agility drills, Jets fans will celebrate this pick. He offers terrifying versatility. Defensive coordinators can line him up as a traditional off-ball linebacker or unleash him off the edge.

“We don’t just want to stop the run; we want to make the quarterback fear the snap. That’s the mentality we bring to the field.”
    — Arvell Reese, Ohio State Pass Rusher

    The Island Corner Returns

At No. 16, the Jets gamble on pure upside. Jermond McCoy missed the 2025 season recovering from an ACL tear, but his 2024 tape remains legendary. He locked down the SEC, registering four interceptions and nine passes defended.

McCoy’s journey back to the gridiron highlights pure grit. He spent 12 months in grueling rehab, battling the severe mental hurdles of missing his entire junior season. Watching him attack his physical therapy with the exact same ferocity he uses to attack wide receivers proved his heart to NFL evaluators. The crisp, chilly winds of MetLife Stadium won’t bother a defensive back who consistently out-muscled elite SEC receivers in the blazing southern heat. He attacks the ball in the air with violent intentions.

    Playoff Implications / What’s Next

New York faces a brutal AFC East schedule this fall. Taking two elite defenders changes their defensive identity immediately. Reese forces quarterbacks to step up in the pocket, right into the teeth of Quinnen Williams. McCoy shuts down the quick passing game on the perimeter, eliminating easy escape routes for opposing offenses. If these picks materialize in April, the Jets defense transforms from solid to an absolute nightmare for the rest of the conference.
