CINCINNATI — Joe Flacco isn’t content holding a clipboard, even if the paycheck says otherwise. The 41-year-old quarterback officially re-signed with the Cincinnati Bengals this week on a one-year, $6 million deal, but his press conference sounded more like a challenge to the rest of the league than a victory lap. Fresh off a 2025 campaign where he rescued the Bengals’ season, Flacco made it clear he still views himself as a top-tier starter.

The “Unfinished Business” of a 41-Year-Old

Flacco didn’t just walk back into Paycor Stadium; he stormed back with a chip on his shoulder. After the Bengals acquired him via trade from Cleveland last October, Flacco provided immediate stability while Joe Burrow recovered from turf toe surgery. In nine appearances for Cincinnati, the veteran threw for 1,664 yards and 13 touchdowns against just four interceptions. He even notched a season-high 470 yards in a shootout against the Bears, proving his arm hasn’t lost its zip despite nearly two decades in the league.

The veteran had options this offseason, including interest from the Las Vegas Raiders, but ultimately chose the familiarity of Zac Taylor’s system. Still, the lack of a clear starting offer from around the league clearly struck a nerve. He completed over 61% of his passes last year and kept Cincinnati in the playoff hunt when the season looked lost. For Flacco, the tape doesn’t lie, even if the birth certificate does.

“I feel like I have unfinished business. That’s part of why I’m still here and playing and doing all those things. And not being one of those guys to go sign somewhere [to start], it pisses me off a little bit. I think teams are dumb for not having me be that guy. But it is what it is.”— Joe Flacco, Bengals Quarterback

Playoff Implications / What’s Next

Cincinnati is betting on “Elite” insurance. By locking up Flacco, the Bengals secure the most overqualified backup in football. For a team with Super Bowl aspirations, Burrow’s health is the only thing standing between them and a deep January run. If Burrow’s toe or previous wrist issues flare up, Taylor knows he has a player who can walk into Lambeau Field or Heinz Field and win a game on three days’ notice.

The rest of the AFC North should take note. While teams like the Steelers and Browns are shuffling through younger, unproven options, Cincinnati has 50,000 career passing yards sitting on their bench. Flacco is only 1,824 yards shy of that milestone and just one touchdown away from tying Joe Montana on the all-time list. He might be the backup for now, but if the 2025 season taught us anything, Joe Flacco is always one snap away from proving everyone “dumb” again.
