MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Vikings gutted their defensive interior and added veteran stopgaps, setting up a massive collision course for the No. 18 overall pick. Free agency brought four-time Pro Bowl punter Johnny Hekker and veteran quarterback Carson Wentz to the Twin Cities. But releasing defensive tackles Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave tore a massive hole in the defensive line, and Harrison Smith’s uncertain future leaves the secondary holding its breath. The top Vikings 2026 NFL Draft predictions now center on one brutal choice: rebuild Brian Flores’ defense or trade up for a lethal offensive weapon.

The Temptation of Jeremiyah Love

Minnesota holds nine total selections. That ammunition gives general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah the firepower to leap from No. 18 to No. 11. The target? Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love. Love brings home-run speed and elite receiving skills. He transforms a standard playbook into a nightmare for opposing linebackers. You can almost feel the tension in the war room; snagging him gives the Vikings an explosive, track-meet offense, but it completely ignores the glaring holes on the other side of the ball.

Reloading the Flores Defense

If the front office stays put at No. 18, the mock draft community universally points to the defense. The safety position demands immediate attention. Oregon standout Dillon Thieneman lit up the combine with a 4.35-second 40-yard dash and a 41-inch vertical leap. He brings the exact range and intelligence Flores demands to structure the secondary.

For a nastier approach, Toledo’s Emmanuel McNeil-Warren offers a bone-jarring presence. He hits like a freight train, bringing the raw physicality needed if the post-Harrison Smith era officially begins.

The secondary also bleeds yardage on the outside. Clemson cornerback Avieon Terrell posted a dominant 90.6 PFF coverage grade over the last two seasons. Signing James Pierre and Tavierre Thomas gives the Vikings breathing room, but Terrell locks down an entire side of the field.

Then there is the gaping wound in the trenches. Florida defensive tackle Caleb Banks stands 6-foot-6 and 327 pounds. He moves with terrifying speed for a massive human, clocking a 5.04-second 40-yard dash. If the middle of the defense collapses, the entire unit drowns. Banks plugs the massive gap left by Allen and Hargrave immediately.

“You don’t replace a legend by committee. If Harrison is gone, you need a guy who hunts the football and strikes fear into crossing receivers. This defense demands violence.”

Playoff Implications / What’s Next

The NFC North punishes weak defenses. Detroit and Green Bay will exploit the middle of the field if Minnesota fails to replace Allen and Hargrave. Drafting Love at No. 11 creates a shootout mentality, forcing the Vikings to outscore their problems every single Sunday. But staying at No. 18 and grabbing a defensive cornerstone like Thieneman or Banks stabilizes the foundation. A strong rookie presence on defense keeps Minnesota squarely in the 2026 playoff hunt, ensuring they dictate the tempo rather than reacting to it. The clock is ticking toward draft night.
