BALTIMORE — The ink never dried. The Baltimore Ravens detonated the NFL offseason Tuesday night, backing out of a blockbuster Maxx Crosby trade after the star edge rusher failed his physical. Hours later, Baltimore’s front office handed former Bengals edge rusher Trey Hendrickson a four-year, $112 million contract.

Medical Red Flags and a Massive Pivot

You can’t hide knee trauma from team doctors. I stood outside the Ravens’ facility Tuesday afternoon, and you could almost feel the tension radiating from the front office when the medical reports finalized. Crosby went under the knife in January to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. He fought through the pain last season until the Las Vegas Raiders finally shut him down. Baltimore needed a clean bill of health to surrender two first-round picks and absorb a $94 million commitment over the next three seasons. The medical staff hit the brakes. The front office listened.

General Manager Eric DeCosta didn’t hesitate. With the Crosby deal dead, the Ravens targeted Hendrickson. They locked down the 31-year-old veteran with $60 million fully guaranteed and a massive $20 million signing bonus. Hendrickson went from a rotational piece early in his career to an absolute terror in Cincinnati, racking up an NFL-leading 17.5 sacks in 2024. Now, he brings that exact chip on his shoulder to M&T Bank Stadium, staying in the AFC North to hunt Joe Burrow twice a year.

“I know there’s no guarantees in this. But I’m going to give everything in my heart and soul to bring a championship to Baltimore. There are no more words needed for that.”
    — Maxx Crosby, Las Vegas Raiders (Spoken Saturday, prior to the collapsed trade)

    Playoff Implications / What’s Next

The Raiders just spent heavily in free agency, assuming Crosby’s massive cap hit was off the books. Now, Las Vegas holds a medical red flag and a fractured relationship with their franchise star. Free agency history is brutal. Back in 2015, Frank Gore agreed to join the Eagles before bolting for the Colts 48 hours later. Deals fall apart. Here is exactly where both franchises stand right now:

    • Baltimore’s Pass Rush: The Ravens keep their 2026 and 2027 first-round picks while adding a dominant edge threat. Hendrickson instantly upgrades a defense that managed only 30 sacks last season.
    • Las Vegas’ Cap Nightmare: The Raiders committed over $250 million to players like Tyler Linderbaum and Nakobe Dean. They must find a new trade partner for Crosby while preparing to draft Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza at No. 1 overall.
