GREEN BAY, Wis. — The opening bell of 2026 NFC North free agency rang, and the Chicago Bears answered with a sledgehammer. While Ryan Poles handed out $70 million to defensive playmakers Coby Bryant and Devin Bush, Green Bay stayed aggressively quiet. General Manager Brian Gutekunst offered a modest two-year deal to Benjamin St-Juste a cornerback desperate for a bounce-back year and traded away premier edge rusher Rashan Gary.

You could almost feel the collective groan echoing through the frozen aluminum bleachers of Lambeau Field. Fans like Mark from Green Bay are flooding the inbox with a single, panicked question: Are the Packers falling behind?

It is a fair question. The Bears smell blood in the water.

The Free Agency Arms Race

The ground shook in Chicago when Poles secured his new defense. Bryant transforms their secondary with true centerfielder range, and Bush brings violent speed to the second level. The heavy hitters are upgrading. Down in Los Angeles, the Rams are tossing cash to protect their aging core. Teams are acting with urgency.

Green Bay? They extended right guard Sean Rhyan on a three-year, $33 million deal and watched backup quarterback Malik Willis bolt for Miami on a massive $67.5 million payday. Gutekunst netted a compensatory draft pick for the loss, but comp picks do not sack Caleb Williams on third down.

Gutekunst operates on a strict diet of draft-and-develop. He hates the exorbitant price tags of March. Yet, the current roster bleeds. Trading Gary erased a massive $28 million cap hit, but it created a glaring hole off the edge. The defensive tackle rotation needs a mauler. The offensive line requires a swing tackle to protect Jordan Love’s massive $220 million investment. And the secondary still needs a lockdown artist. Relying on St-Juste to instantly solidify the perimeter is a massive gamble.

“We know the noise outside the building. Teams are spending big. But championships are built in December, not March. We trust the guys in this room.”
— Matt LaFleur, Head Coach

Playoff Implications / What’s Next

Green Bay cannot survive the 2026 gauntlet by standing still. The Bears just shrunk the talent gap. Chicago’s defense will fly around the field this fall, aiming squarely at Jordan Love.

If Gutekunst refuses to pay premium free-agent prices, he must hit a home run in April’s draft. The Packers need immediate, day-one contributors at defensive tackle and along the offensive trench. The chilly winds of November forgive no one. If the rookie class falters and the bargain-bin veterans stumble, the Bears will seize the division crown.
