Broncos Backfield Scramble: With Top Targets Gone, Is Alvin Kamara Heading to Denver?

DENVER — The initial wave of free agency left the Denver Broncos holding the bag. Kenneth Walker secured his money with the Kansas City Chiefs, Tyler Allgeier bolted for the Arizona Cardinals, and Travis Etienne locked in a deal with the New Orleans Saints. You could almost feel the collective groan roll through Broncos Country when the Etienne news broke. If you follow the latest Denver Broncos running back rumors, you know general manager George Paton and head coach Sean Payton suddenly face a massive void next to sophomore standout RJ Harvey.

    The Saints Connection

Etienne’s arrival in New Orleans creates a massive logjam in the Superdome backfield. The Saints recently restructured Alvin Kamara’s contract, lowering his 2026 cap hit by $8 million. But paying Etienne top dollar makes the 30-year-old Kamara an incredibly expensive luxury. Kamara rushed for just 460 yards in 10 games during the 2025 season, averaging a sluggish 3.6 yards per carry. Despite the recent dip in production, a reunion with Payton makes perfect sense. Payton knows exactly how to scheme Kamara open in space, and Kamara provides the veteran pass-catching presence Denver desperately needs on third down.

    Plan B: Dobbins or Dowdle?

If New Orleans holds onto Kamara or the asking price climbs too high, the Broncos must pivot to the remaining free agents. J.K. Dobbins provided an incredible spark for Denver last fall. Before suffering a foot injury in Week 10, Dobbins racked up 772 rushing yards at 5.0 yards a pop. Dobbins didn’t just run the ball; he carried the offense’s physical attitude. Alternatively, the front office has eyes on Rico Dowdle. Dowdle broke out with the Carolina Panthers in 2025, bruising his way to 1,076 yards and six touchdowns. He offers the heavy, downhill style that Payton loves at the goal line.

“We lost some names on the board early, but panic doesn’t win championships. We evaluate who fits our physical identity, we check the tape, and we go get them.”
    — Sean Payton, Denver Broncos Head Coach

    Playoff Implications / What’s Next

Denver fell agonizingly short of a Super Bowl run last January, losing a heartbreaker to the Patriots in the playoffs. A one-dimensional offense doomed them in the clutch. Quarterback Bo Nix needs a reliable safety valve out of the backfield to survive the AFC West gauntlet this season. If the Broncos swing a trade for Kamara, they immediately threaten the Chiefs’ division supremacy with a dynamic, unpredictable passing attack. If they bring back Dobbins or sign Dowdle, they maintain a gritty, ground-and-pound identity to wear out opposing defenses. The clock is ticking, and a major move is entirely expected within the next 48 hours.
