Deebo Samuel Drops Free Agency Bombshell: Is the Star WR Done in Washington?

WASHINGTON D.C. — Deebo Samuel is officially putting the NFL on notice. The Washington Commanders wide receiver dropped a massive hint about his 2026 plans, and he sounds ready to pack his bags. During a candid appearance on the “Downs 2 Business” podcast, the veteran playmaker made his intentions crystal clear. He plans to hit the open market for the first time in his seven-year career.

Testing the Waters After a Solo Season in D.C.

Commanders general manager Adam Peters executed a blockbuster trade with the San Francisco 49ers last offseason to pair Samuel with Terry McLaurin. The strategy looked flawless on paper. Then, extended contract negotiations and an untimely injury sidelined McLaurin, forcing Samuel to carry the offensive load early in 2025. He responded with physical, bruising routes that punished opposing secondaries week after week.

Samuel finished the 2025 campaign with 72 catches for 727 yards and 5 touchdowns. While he only boasts one career 1,000-yard receiving season, his true value lives in his versatility. Over his career, Samuel has racked up 406 receptions for 5,519 yards and 27 touchdowns through the air, while destroying defensive angles on the ground with 219 carries for 1,218 yards and 21 rushing scores.

He turned 30 this past January. In NFL wide receiver years, that number often terrifies front offices. However, Samuel operates differently. He remains a battering ram in cleats. You can feel the stadium hold its breath every time he catches a slant route and turns his shoulders upfield. Defenses still heavily gameplan for him, knowing one missed tackle turns a short gain into an explosive highlight.

“Bro, I’m a free agent, so we’re gonna see what’s going on.”
    — Deebo Samuel, Washington Commanders Wide Receiver

    Playoff Implications / What’s Next

When podcast hosts Josh and Caleb Downs pressed Samuel on his future, the relaxed studio atmosphere contrasted sharply with the millions of dollars hanging in the balance. Samuel laughed off the pressure, but his answers signaled a player eager to hear outside offers.

Washington possesses plenty of cap space entering 2026, but the front office faces a mountain of impending free agents. Paying top dollar for an aging, highly physical receiver might not align with their long-term rebuild strategy. Meanwhile, contending teams desperate for a veteran enforcer on the perimeter will aggressively dial Samuel’s agent. His sheer presence forces safeties to creep into the box, opening up deep shots for teammates.

Expect aggressive suitors from the AFC East and NFC West to make early phone calls when the tampering window opens next month. The Deebo sweepstakes are officially open.
