PITTSBURGH — Sascha Denzinger thought he was logging on for a routine interview about his decades of loyalty to the Black and Gold. He didn’t expect a 6-foot-6 linebacker to be waiting on the other end of the line. Steelers linebacker Julius Welschof, a fellow German, crashed the call to deliver life-changing news: Denzinger is officially the Steelers 2025 International Fan of the Year.
A Three-Decade Journey Comes Full Circle
Denzinger’s obsession with Pittsburgh football didn’t start yesterday. He fell for the Steelers in the early 1990s, a time when finding NFL coverage in Germany required true grit. By the mid-90s, he was running the only German-language Steelers website on the internet. He later founded the Steelers Nation German fan club, serving as its president and building a community thousands of miles away from the North Side.
The surprise left the veteran fan struggling for air. Welschof, who made his own waves as an International Player Pathway standout, shared a unique bond with Denzinger through their shared heritage. The honor includes more than just bragging rights. Denzinger will receive a customized Steelers jersey and a trip to the 2026 NFL Draft right here in Pittsburgh. He will join 31 other nominees as the league prepares to crown the Ultimate NFL International Fan of the Year on the big stage.
“To be given this honor, to be able to be the Steelers International Fan of the Year, is amazing. For me, this is full circle and I am very happy about it, but also very, very proud to be representing such a great franchise. At the moment I am a little speechless.”
— Sascha Denzinger, 2025 International Fan of the Year
What This Means for the 2026 NFL Draft
The timing couldn’t be better. With Pittsburgh hosting the 2026 NFL Draft this April, the city is bracing for an influx of global fans. Denzinger won’t just be another face in the crowd; he’ll be a central figure in the league’s celebration of international growth. His story highlights the NFL’s massive push into the European market, specifically Germany, which has become a primary hub for the sport outside the United States.
Denzinger’s decades of work—translating news, organizing watch parties, and maintaining the German fan site—prepared him for this moment. As the draft approaches, the Steelers have ensured that one of their most dedicated global ambassadors finally gets his “home game” experience in the Steel City.
