Raiders Poach Matt Robinson from Giants in Stunning Staff Shakeup

LAS VEGAS — The ink hadn’t even dried on his Giants contract. In a move that stunned the coaching carousel Monday, Matt Robinson is leaving New York before his bags are even unpacked. The 32-year-old, initially hired to join John Harbaugh’s new regime in the Big Apple, is headed west to become the Las Vegas Raiders’ secondary coach.

    The Klint Kubiak Connection

Fresh off a Super Bowl victory with Seattle, newly minted Raiders Head Coach Klint Kubiak isn’t wasting time building his first staff. Kubiak identified a crucial link: familiarity. Robinson isn’t just a random hire; he’s a strategic reunion.

The move reunites Robinson with Rob Leonard, the Raiders’ newly promoted Defensive Coordinator. The two grinded together on the Baltimore Ravens’ staff in 2022, forging a bond that Kubiak is banking on to fix a Vegas secondary that needs an identity.

The Giants didn’t stand in the way. Despite Robinson following John Harbaugh from Baltimore to New York just weeks ago as an assistant defensive line coach, Harbaugh granted permission for the move. It’s a clear step up the ladder—Robinson jumps from an assistant position role to running his own room as the primary Secondary Coach.

“This league is about trust and speed. Matt speaks the same language as Rob [Leonard]. We don’t have time to teach coaches the system; we need guys who can teach the players on Day 1. Matt is that guy.”
    — Klint Kubiak, Raiders Head Coach

    Why This Matters for Vegas

The Raiders are betting big on youth and chemistry. Promoting Rob Leonard to DC was the first domino; bringing in Robinson is the second. This isn’t just about X’s and O’s. It’s about stabilizing a defense while trade rumors still swirl around star pass rusher Maxx Crosby.

Robinson brings a hybrid background that fits the modern NFL perfectly. He spent the last two seasons as the Ravens’ outside linebackers coach but has deep roots in the secondary from his playing days at Maryland. That front-to-back knowledge is exactly what Leonard needs to marry the Raiders’ pass rush with their coverage.

For the Giants, it’s a headache. Harbaugh has to fill a hole on a staff he thought was finalized. For Vegas? It’s a coup.
