Dolphins Release Tyreek Hill, Save $22.8M in Massive Roster Purge

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The “Cheetah” is no longer loose in Miami. In a move that signals a violent shifting of tides for the franchise, the Miami Dolphins released eight-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Tyreek Hill on Monday. The maneuver clears $22.8 million in salary cap space but leaves the Dolphins without the most explosive playmaker in their history.

End of an Era: Cap Casualties and Knee Concerns

Hill’s departure is the headliner of a bloody Monday in Miami, as the front office initiated a scorched-earth rebuild. Sources confirmed to ESPN that the team also cut ties with veteran edge rusher Bradley Chubb and offensive lineman James Daniels.

The decision to move on from Hill, who turns 32 on March 1, comes down to a collision of finances and medical red flags. Hill is currently rehabilitating a devastating knee injury—a dislocated knee compounded by a torn ACL—suffered in Week 4 against the New York Jets. While his timeline for a return remains murky, his release immediately makes him a free agent, free to sign with any contender willing to gamble on his recovery.

General Manager Chris Grier’s decision to eat a reported $28.2 million in dead money underscores the urgency of Miami’s financial reset. The Dolphins were projected to be significantly over the 2026 cap, and this move, while painful, was mathematically necessary.

From MVP Pace to abrupt Exit

Hill’s tenure in South Florida was a blur of record-breaking production before it came to a screeching halt. He posted back-to-back seasons of over 1,700 yards upon his arrival, including a league-leading 1,799 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2023.

However, the 2024 season showed the first cracks in the armor. Battling a lingering wrist issue, Hill’s production dipped to 959 yards as the offense sputtered. The bottom fell out in 2025; Hill managed just 265 yards and one touchdown through four games before the knee injury ended his campaign—and ultimately, his Dolphins career.

“It’s the nature of the beast. You hate to see a guy like ‘Reek go because he changes the geometry of the field just by standing there. But we know the business side always has the final say.”

    Playoff Implications: The Tua Question

With Hill and Chubb gone, the spotlight burns hotter than ever on quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. The former top-five pick was benched late in the 2025 season and has openly expressed a willingness to waive his no-trade clause. With $54 million fully guaranteed on the books for Tagovailoa in 2026, Miami’s next move will define their decade.

If the Dolphins are tearing it down to the studs, trading Tagovailoa seems inevitable. Without his primary weapon in Hill and his defensive anchor in Chubb, keeping a high-priced quarterback on a rebuilding roster makes little strategic sense. Expect Miami to be aggressive in the draft, potentially eyeing a full reset at the game’s most important position.
