John Harbaugh Teases ‘Hall of Fame’ Target for Giants at No. 5: Is Caleb Downs the Move?

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New York Giants own the No. 5 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, and new head coach John Harbaugh isn’t hiding his cards. During a weekend sit-down on the Mike Francesa Podcast, Harbaugh practically started measuring Ohio State safety Caleb Downs for a gold jacket, calling himself a “big fan” of the defensive playmaker.

Best Player Available: The Harbaugh Philosophy

Harbaugh is stepping into his first draft with the G-Men after a legendary 18-year run in Baltimore, and he’s bringing a specific blueprint to MetLife Stadium. While the Giants have holes at right tackle and wide receiver, Harbaugh made it clear he won’t reach for a “need” with a top-five selection. He wants a superstar.

“We’ll take the best player,” Harbaugh told Francesa. “When you draft that high, you take the best player. It’s not a need pick. It’s the best player pick because you’re going for the guy that’s going to be that kind of player… a guy that you would like to see someday wearing a gold jacket.”

Downs, a 6-foot, 205-pound force of nature, fits that description perfectly. After a dominant season at Ohio State where he racked up 68 tackles, two interceptions, and a sack, scouts have labeled him a “generational” safety prospect. For a Giants defense that watched Tyler Nubin struggle on the back end last season, Downs represents an instant upgrade to a unit that already features Brian Burns and Dexter Lawrence.

“We favor Hall of Fame safeties. So, if we have a chance to draft a potential future Hall of Fame safety in Caleb Downs, that would be just fine with me. I’d take him in a second.”
    — John Harbaugh, New York Giants Head Coach

Draft DNA: The Reed and Hamilton Connection

History suggests we should take Harbaugh’s praise seriously. He has a track record of turning elite safety prospects into All-Pros. He coached Brian Dawkins in Philadelphia and built championship defenses around Ed Reed in Baltimore. Most recently, he saw the Ravens transform after snagging Kyle Hamilton.

Downs offers that same “Swiss Army Knife” versatility. He can drop into the box to snuff out the run or erase a tight end in man coverage. The atmosphere at the Giants’ facility is already buzzing; you can sense the shift in energy as Harbaugh finalizes his staff, including defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson. Bringing in a player like Downs would be the ultimate statement for this new regime.

    What’s Next for Big Blue

The NFL Scouting Combine is just around the corner, where Downs is expected to cement his status as a blue-chip talent. The Giants will likely look at offensive line help in free agency to free themselves up for this “best player” strategy at No. 5. If the board falls their way, the Harbaugh era in New York could start with a bang in the secondary.
