Giants’ 2026 Blueprint: Why the Seahawks’ Super Bowl Win Changes the Strategy at No. 5

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The New England Patriots took a beating in Santa Clara last Sunday, and let’s be honest: Giants fans loved every second of it. But beyond the schadenfreude of watching a rival fall, the Seattle Seahawks’ Super Bowl victory provided a masterclass in roster construction that John Harbaugh and Joe Schoen are undoubtedly studying right now.

You don’t need a quarterback messiah. You need a fortress.

Sam Darnold didn’t carry Seattle; he drove the bus while a ferocious defense and a pristine run game paved the road. With the Giants holding the No. 5 overall pick and Jaxson Dart entering a pivotal offseason, the question isn’t just “Who do we draft?” It’s “What are we building?”

    The “Good Enough” QB Model

Doug Mollin asked if the NFL is pivoting away from the obsession with finding the next Patrick Mahomes. The answer is yes, but with a caveat. You don’t need a top-five quarterback to hoist the Lombardi Trophy, but you do need mistake-free football in January.

Sam Darnold proved that. He turned the ball over during the regular season, sure. But in the playoffs? Clean. Efficient. Deadly.

For the Giants, this puts the spotlight squarely on Jaxson Dart. The Seahawks’ blueprint suggests the Giants don’t need Dart to be Superman. They need him to be the point guard of an offense that runs through a dominant offensive line and a defense that refuses to break. That makes the decision at offensive coordinator—sticking with Matt Nagy—even more critical. Nagy’s job isn’t to turn Dart into Mahomes; it’s to turn him into a winner.

    Harbaugh’s Staff: Trust or Bust?

The skepticism around the coaching staff is palpable in my inbox this week. Wayne Mirsky pointed out the “gambles” Harbaugh took, specifically missing out on offensive line coach Carmen Bricillo and settling for Mike Bloomgren.

Here is the reality: The NFL coaching carousel is brutal.

Harbaugh wanted Todd Monken. He got him, but lost him to the Browns. That’s the business. The hiring of Bloomgren might not send fans rushing to buy season tickets, but his track record with offensive lines is solid. And let’s cool the jets on the Chad Hall promotion delay. Harbaugh interviewed Robert Prince. It didn’t work out. He went with Hall. That’s not a failure; that’s due diligence.

Harbaugh won’t bat 1.000 on hires. No coach does. But if you think Mike Vrabel—who just replaced Jerod Mayo in New England—didn’t have misses in Tennessee, check the tape. Coaching is about leadership, not just the names on the office doors.

The Draft Dilemma: Trenches or Playmakers?

With the Combine approaching, the debate for the No. 5 pick is heating up. Seth Weissman asked if the Giants should prioritize the trenches over a flashy receiver.

    Absolutely.

If the goal is to beat the Eagles and replicate the Seahawks, you build inside-out. The name to watch? Francis Mauigoa.

While Utah’s Spencer Fano is an athletic freak who is climbing draft boards, Mauigoa brings a raw power that fits the NFC East perfectly. He is a road grader. Fano has the feet, but he plays off-balance too often for my taste. Mauigoa offers position flexibility and the kind of nasty demeanor that defines a Harbaugh team.

    The Wildcard: Caleb Downs

Jeffrey Jacobs brought up a fascinating scenario: What about safety Caleb Downs?

If the Giants trade down or if the board falls strangely, Downs is a legitimate option. He isn’t just a safety; he is a defensive weapon who erases mistakes. In a copycat league, look at what Seattle’s safeties did to the Patriots’ passing attack. Downs brings that same eraser capability.

“I am going to trust Harbaugh… He has been successful in the business of building coaching staffs and winning games for a long time. He knows far more about it than any of us do.”
    — Ed Valentine, on the fan anxiety regarding the new staff

    What’s Next: Free Agency First

Before we lock in a draft pick, we have to see how Joe Schoen attacks free agency. The defensive line needs bodies. The secondary needs a veteran presence. If the Giants spend big on a right tackle like Jermaine Eluemunor (if he hits the market), it frees them up to take Caleb Downs or a playmaker at No. 5. If they stay quiet, expect an offensive lineman to be the card turned in.

The Seahawks just showed the world that a team is greater than its quarterback. Now, it’s New York’s turn to prove they were paying attention.
