MINNEAPOLIS — The honeymoon is over. After J.J. McCarthy’s injury-riddled 2025 campaign left the Minnesota Vikings with more questions than answers, franchise legend Jared Allen isn’t waiting for a rebound. He’s calling for a replacement.
Appearing on the “Up & Adams” show Wednesday, the newly inducted Hall of Famer didn’t mince words about Minnesota’s quarterback situation. His solution? A blockbuster trade for Miami Dolphins outcast Tua Tagovailoa.
The Quote That Shook The NFC North
Allen, never one to shy away from a hot take, pitched the idea of pairing Miami’s benched lefty with Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell. With McCarthy struggling to stay on the field, Allen believes the Vikings need a proven winner now, not a project for later.
“I’ll be honest. I think people might hate me for it, I think Tua [Tagovailoa] is actually an interesting option. I mean, the dude won a championship in college, right? He shows signs. And if you bring you know, you put Kevin with that offense, you get a good offensive line, [it can work].” — Jared Allen, Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2025
McCarthy’s “Redshirt” Year Went Wrong
The Vikings hoped 2025 would be McCarthy’s breakout party after he missed his entire rookie season with a meniscus tear. Instead, it was a medical nightmare.
McCarthy’s durability is now the franchise’s single biggest concern. His 2025 medical chart reads like a trauma ward intake form:
- Weeks 3-8: High-ankle sprain.
- Week 14: Concussion protocol.
- Week 17: Right-hand fracture (missed the Christmas game).
When he was active, the results were shaky at best. In 10 starts, McCarthy posted a pedestrian 1,632 passing yards and a near-even split of 11 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. While he managed a 6-4 record, the defense did the heavy lifting. The “franchise savior” looked hesitant, battered, and consistently out of rhythm.
The Tua Factor: distressed Asset or Franchise Savior?
Allen’s proposal targets a market inefficiency. Tua Tagovailoa, once the face of the Dolphins, found himself on the bench late in the 2025 season. Despite signing a massive four-year, $212.4 million extension in 2024, Miami seems ready to move on.
The Fit: Kevin O’Connell’s system relies on timing, anticipation, and accuracy—Tua’s three biggest strengths. Unlike McCarthy, who looked lost processing defenses this year, Tua processes at an elite level when protected.
The Hurdle: The money. Trading for Tua would require significant cap gymnastics. Miami would eat a historic amount of dead money to move him, and Minnesota would need to absorb a massive contract for a QB who was just benched. But as Allen points out, if you want to win in 2026, you can’t rely on a quarterback who has missed 24 games in two years.
Playoff Implications / What’s Next
The Vikings are in a perilous spot. The defense is championship-ready, but the quarterback room is on life support. If GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah ignores Allen’s advice and runs it back with McCarthy, he’s betting his job on the 23-year-old’s health. If he swings a trade for Tua, he signals to the locker room that the window is now.
Expect Minnesota to be aggressive in the veteran QB market when free agency opens in March. Whether it’s Tua or a bridge veteran, J.J. McCarthy will not be handed the keys in 2026 without a fight.
