TAMPA, FL — The City of Tampa officially stood still yesterday to honor the man who has narrated the pulse of the franchise for nearly four decades. Mayor Jane Castor joined forces with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to formally proclaim January 27 as Gene Deckerhoff Day, a tribute to the legendary broadcaster’s 37-season tenure as the “Voice of the Buccaneers.”
A Legacy Defined by 1,100 Touchdowns
Deckerhoff, who joined the organization in 1989, has been the primary architect of the team’s auditory history. Over 37 seasons, he called more than 800 games, including two Super Bowl victories that defined different eras of Tampa Bay football. Whether it was the grit of the 2002 defense or the precision of the 2020 championship run, Deckerhoff was the constant. His signature “Touchdown, Tampa Bay!” has echoed through Florida living rooms over 1,100 times, marking him as the third-longest tenured radio voice in NFL history.
The ceremony comes just weeks after Deckerhoff announced his retirement, effective at the conclusion of the 2025 season. At 80 years old, the Hall of Fame broadcaster decided the time was right to step away from the mic, leaving behind a resume that includes 17 Florida Sportscaster of the Year awards. The atmosphere at the proclamation was electric, reflecting the deep-seated connection between the man in the booth and the fans in the stands.
“Calling Buccaneers games has been one of the greatest honors of my professional career. I’ve had the fortune to form meaningful relationships with players, coaches, and staff… I will miss doing what I love, but now is the right time to step away.” — Gene Deckerhoff, Voice of the Buccaneers
What’s Next for the Legend
While the city has its day of celebration, the honors are far from over. Rumors from within the organization suggest a Ring of Honor induction is the logical next step later in 2026. Deckerhoff’s departure marks the end of an era for the booth he shared with analyst Dave Moore for 19 years. As the team transitions into the 2026 offseason, finding a successor who can capture even a fraction of Deckerhoff’s “Fire them cannons!” energy remains the biggest challenge facing the Bucs’ media department. Fans can expect a massive season-long tribute series as the franchise prepares to say its final goodbye to the man who made every Sunday feel like a championship battle.
