LOS ANGELES — The football world is reeling following the news that former NFL defensive tackle Kevin Johnson was found dead Wednesday morning in Los Angeles. Authorities discovered Johnson, 55, at a homeless encampment in the Willowbrook area. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has since ruled the death a homicide, citing blunt head trauma and stab wounds as the cause.

From Texas Southern to the NFL Trenches

Johnson’s journey to the professional ranks began at Texas Southern, where he anchored a defensive line alongside future Hall of Famer Michael Strahan. His raw power and 305-pound frame caught the eyes of scouts, leading the New England Patriots to select him in the fourth round of the 1993 NFL Draft. While he never saw regular-season action in Foxborough, Johnson eventually found his footing in Philadelphia.

During a two-year stint with the Eagles from 1995 to 1996, Johnson proved he belonged. He racked up 7.0 sacks in 23 games, including a career-high six sacks in 1995. That same year, he showcased his hustle by returning a fumble 37 yards for a touchdown. He eventually moved west, joining the Oakland Raiders for the 1997 season. He appeared in 15 games for the Silver and Black, recording 11 tackles during a tough 4-12 campaign for the franchise.

    A Career Beyond the Shield

After his NFL tenure, Johnson didn’t hang up the cleats immediately. He transitioned to the Arena Football League, where he became a champion with the Orlando Predators in 1998. He also spent time with the Los Angeles Avengers. Despite his on-field success, friends and former teammates noted that Johnson faced significant health hurdles in his later years, which eventually led to his displacement on the streets of LA.

The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the homicide. No suspects have been named at this time. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the post-career struggles many former athletes face, particularly regarding long-term health and stability. For now, the “Silver and Black” community stands still to honor a man who once fought in their trenches.
