HISTORY REPEATS: Patriots, Broncos Clash in AFC Championship 10 Years Later

DENVER — Ten years to the day after Peyton Manning and Tom Brady fought their final duel, the football gods have delivered a sequel. The script is flipped, the faces are new, but the stakes remain absolute: Win, and you play for the Lombardi. Lose, and you’re forgotten.

As the NFL on CBS tweet reminded us this morning: “Legacies will be forged.” Sunday at Mile High isn’t just a game; it’s a ghostly echo of 2016. The 14-3 Denver Broncos host the 14-3 New England Patriots with a trip to Super Bowl LX on the line.

The Stidham Shock: A Backup’s Shot at Glory

The headline all week hasn’t been the rivalry—it’s been the ankle. Bo Nix is out. The rookie sensation who guided Denver to the No. 1 seed fractured his ankle in the Divisional Round overtime thriller against Buffalo.

    Patriots. Broncos. AFC Championship.

A win and you're one step away from immortality.

Legacies will be forged, history will be written. https://t.co/8zgGtEuWYA

    — NFL on CBS 🏈 (@NFLonCBS) January 24, 2026

Enter Jarrett Stidham. The irony is suffocating. Stidham, the man once drafted to replace Brady in New England, now stands between his former team and the Super Bowl. He hasn’t started a game since 2023. Now, Sean Payton is handing him the keys to the Ferrari in the biggest driving test of his life.

The Patriots aren’t sympathizing. Led by Drake Maye, New England’s offense has averaged 28 points per game since December. Maye has been clinical, throwing 25 touchdowns to just 4 interceptions in his sophomore campaign. He doesn’t care about the narrative; he cares about the ring.

“Nobody outside this building thinks we can do it without Bo. Good. We like it quiet. But watch what happens when Stiddy [Stidham] gets loose. He’s been waiting three years for this snap.” — Courtland Sutton, Broncos WR

“I watched that 2016 game on TV as a kid. The noise, the hits, the missed extra point. It’s a different era now. We aren’t ghosts. We’re here to take the Lamar Hunt Trophy home.” — Drake Maye, Patriots QB

    The X-Factor: Mile High Defense

History isn’t just repeating; it’s rhyming. Just like 2015, Denver boasts the league’s nastiest defense. They led the NFL in sacks (52) this season. Patrick Surtain II has shut down half the field.

New England’s path to victory is simple but brutal: Run the ball. The Broncos allowed 140 rushing yards last week. If Rhamondre Stevenson gets going, Stidham won’t even get the chance to play hero. But if the Patriots are forced to throw into the “No Fly Zone” 2.0, the crowd noise at Mile High will crush them.

    Playoff Implications / What’s Next

The winner punches a ticket to Super Bowl LX at Levi’s Stadium to face the winner of the Rams-Seahawks NFC title bout. For the Patriots, a win validates the post-Belichick rebuild instantly. For the Broncos, a win with a backup QB would go down as one of the greatest coaching feats in NFL history.

Prediction: The Broncos’ defense drags the game into the mud, just like 2016. Stidham manages the game, and Wil Lutz hits a walk-off winner. Broncos 20, Patriots 17.
