Sean McVay’s Face Said It All: Rams Survive the “Cardiac Bears” in OT Thriller

Like many of you watching at home, Sean McVay looked like he’d just seen a ghost.

You know the look. Mouth slightly open, eyes wide, headset specifically tailored to not mess up the hair—but totally frozen.

The Rams were up 17-10. They had the game in a vice grip. Then they got cute, went ultra-conservative, punted the ball back with 1:50 on the clock, and invited the chaos. And because it’s the 2025 Chicago Bears, chaos arrived right on schedule.

The Play That Defied Physics

Let’s talk about that fourth-and-4 from the 14-yard line. This shouldn’t have been a touchdown. It shouldn’t have even been a completion.

The Rams’ pass rush was home. Jared Verse and Josaiah Stewart were in Caleb Williams’ lap instantly. The kid didn’t just scramble; he retreated to a different zip code. He was backpedaling near the 45-yard line—a solid 30 yards behind the line of scrimmage. That’s usually where drives go to die.

Instead, with Verse breathing down his neck, Williams uncorks a fading, off-his-back-foot prayer that traveled 51.2 air yards (shoutout Next Gen Stats) to the back corner of the end zone.

And somehow, Cole Kmet comes down with it.

Tie ballgame. 17-17. Soldier Field goes nuclear. McVay looks like he needs a drink.

The Reality Check

For a second, it felt like the “Cardiac Bears” were destined to steal this one. They’ve been pulling rabbits out of hats all season, and that Kmet catch felt like the final magic trick.

But playoff football is cruel.

Overtime started, and the magic ran out of juice. The Bears got the ball, moved it a bit, and then reality hit hard. Williams tried to make one more play, but Kam Curl wasn’t having it. Curl baited him, jumped the route, and picked it off at the Rams’ 22.

That was the air leaving the balloon. Stafford (who took a beating all night—4 sacks) did just enough to move the chains, and then it was time for the “Thiccer Kicker.”

Harrison Mevis stepped up and drilled the 42-yarder like it was a warm-up rep.

What’s Next

The Rams didn’t play pretty. They let a dead team zombie-walk back into the game. But in January, nobody cares about style points. You just have to survive.

McVay can finally exhale. The Rams are heading to the NFC Championship to face the Seahawks in Seattle. But I guarantee you, he’s going to be seeing that Caleb Williams scramble in his nightmares tonight.

Would you like me to pull up the early odds for the Rams vs. Seahawks NFC Championship game?
