SEATTLE — Christian McCaffrey added a new title to his legendary resume Friday, as NFL players voted the San Francisco 49ers star the winner of the 2026 Bart Starr Award. The prestigious honor, which recognizes outstanding character and leadership on and off the field, comes at a high-pressure moment: San Francisco faces a win-or-go-home NFL Divisional Round battle tonight against the Seattle Seahawks at 8 p.m. ET.

The Bart Starr Award is unique because the winner is chosen exclusively by current NFL peers. McCaffrey’s 2025 campaign was historic, as he finished with 1,202 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground, while adding 102 receptions for 924 yards and seven more scores through the air. His dual-threat dominance helped him surpass Marshall Faulk for the most career games with both a rushing and receiving touchdown.

Away from the gridiron, the Christian McCaffrey Foundation drove the selection. His “23 and Troops” initiative provides health resources for veterans, while “The Logan Project” delivers gaming consoles to children’s hospitals. McCaffrey is the third 49er to win, joining Hall of Famers Brent Jones (1998) and John Lynch (2007). The official ceremony takes place on February 7, 2026, during Super Bowl Weekend in San Francisco.

“I’m humbled and very honored. It’s an awesome award, and I don’t take it lightly. I feel like the luckiest guy… I appreciate being recognized by my fellow players around the league.” — Christian McCaffrey, San Francisco 49ers Running Back

Tonight’s contest is the ultimate tiebreaker between these NFC West rivals. After splitting the regular season series—with San Francisco winning 17-13 in Week 1 and Seattle taking a 13-3 defensive struggle in Week 18—the stakes have never been higher. Seattle enters as the #1 seed with a 14-3 record, while the 12-5 49ers are fresh off a gritty 23-19 Wild Card win over Philadelphia.

The winner advances to the NFC Championship on January 25. With home-field advantage at the notoriously loud Lumen Field, the Seahawks aim to stifle a Niners offense that led the league in scrimmage touches this season. For San Francisco, the path to Super Bowl LX runs directly through the Pacific Northwest.
