Stafford Closes the Door: Rams Survive Panthers’ Upset Bid in 34-31 Thriller

    Key Takeaways

    • The Result: Los Angeles Rams defeat Carolina Panthers 34-31 to advance to the NFC Divisional Round.
    • The Hero: Matthew Stafford engineered a 71-yard drive in two minutes, capped by a 19-yard TD to Colby Parkinson.
    • All-Pro Impact: Puka Nacua totaled 111 receiving yards and scored two touchdowns (one receiving, one rushing).

CHARLOTTE — Matthew Stafford didn’t need a miracle; he just needed two minutes. The veteran quarterback, fresh off earning All-Pro honors, silenced a raucous Bank of America Stadium crowd by leading a surgical seven-play scoring drive to secure a 34-31 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Saturday afternoon.

    The Stafford Masterclass

Despite entering the game as 10-point underdogs, the Panthers pushed the Rams to the brink. Carolina took a 31-27 lead with just 2:43 remaining after Bryce Young found Jalen Coker for a 7-yard touchdown. With their season on the line, the Rams turned to their veteran leader.

Stafford, who finished with 304 yards and three touchdowns, looked Davante Adams in the eye before the final possession and reportedly told him, “Let’s snatch these guys’ hearts.” He did exactly that. The drive culminated in a high-point, 19-yard strike to tight end Colby Parkinson, who tightroped the pylon for the go-ahead score with less than a minute on the clock.

The Rams’ defense, which struggled to contain Bryce Young’s improvisational playmaking for much of the second half, finally held firm on the ensuing possession to end the Panthers’ Cinderella hopes.

    What They Said

“That’s why he’s a Hall of Famer. There was no panic on the sideline. We knew if we gave #9 the ball back with time, we were going to win this game.” — Sean McVay, Rams Head Coach

“We had them. It hurts to come that close and not finish, but this team proved we belong on this stage. We’re not the same old Panthers.” — Bryce Young, Panthers Quarterback

    Playoff Path: Who’s Next?

The Rams (13-5) are heading back to the Divisional Round for the second consecutive year. Their destination depends on the results of Sunday’s remaining Wild Card matchups. If the Philadelphia Eagles defeat the San Francisco 49ers, the Rams will travel to Seattle to face the top-seeded Seahawks. If the Eagles falter, a high-stakes rematch in Detroit or Chicago could be on the horizon.
