Sonny Styles Shatters Combine Expectations, Sparks Draft Frenzy for Giants at No. 5

INDIANAPOLIS — Sonny Styles just blew the roof off Lucas Oil Stadium. The Ohio State linebacker took the field at the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine on Thursday and turned heads immediately. You could practically hear the collective gasp from the scouts in the bleachers when his numbers flashed on the big screen. Measuring in at a massive 6-foot-5 and 244 pounds, Styles posted a freakish 43.5-inch vertical jump.

That leap stands as the highest by an off-ball linebacker at the combine since 2003, trailing only Cameron Wake’s legendary 45.5-inch mark. He followed that up by blazing through a 4.46-second 40-yard dash and sticking an 11-foot-2-inch broad jump. The numbers do not just cement his top-10 draft projection; they demand attention from every defensive coordinator in the league.

    The New York Anchor

ESPN analyst Peter Schrager sees exactly where Styles belongs. During Thursday’s episode of “NFL Live,” Schrager sat alongside Mina Kimes, Field Yates, and Laura Rutledge and planted his flag.

Styles brings a raw, explosive energy that fits perfectly into the modern NFL defense. The New York Giants own the fifth overall selection in the upcoming draft, set for April 23-25 in Pittsburgh. While Giants brass frequently preaches a “best-player-available” philosophy, Schrager envisions a specific role for the Ohio State star.

“Put it in the books right now because we all fall in love with draft prospects. Other guys have crushes on Sydney Sweeney and Halle Berry. I am in full-blown crush mode with Sonny Styles… John Harbaugh’s defenses have been anchored by Ray Lewis, CJ Mosley, Roquan Smith. New York Giants sit there at number five… I wonder if the Giants see Sonny Styles as that potential guy for the next 10 years there.”
    — Peter Schrager, ESPN Analyst

Draft Day Implications / What’s Next

The Giants desperately need a terrifying presence in the middle of the field. Schrager comparing Styles to the legendary linebackers of Harbaugh’s Baltimore Ravens defenses carries massive weight. A team valued at $10.1 billion cannot afford to miss on a top-five pick.

Styles proved he possesses the raw athletic traits. Now, the question shifts to team fit. General managers will spend the next two months tearing down his game tape to see if his processing speed matches his explosive testing. If Thursday was any indication, the Giants will have a very difficult time passing on him when they go on the clock in Pittsburgh.
