Steelers Offseason Shakeup: Coaches Jump Ship as Ex-Guard Daniels Hits the Market

PITTSBURGH — The 2026 NFL offseason waits for no one. I stood on the sidelines during the Steelers’ final game this past season, and you could physically feel the tension radiating from the coaching staff. Change hovered in the freezing air. Today, the Pittsburgh Steelers offseason news cycle burns hot. Mike Tomlin’s former assistants are fleeing the nest for the West Coast. Add in a brutal string of injuries forcing former Pittsburgh guard James Daniels onto the open market, and the black-and-gold ripple effect is officially reshaping the league.

Coaching Carousel: Martin to L.A., Azzanni to Vegas

Jim Harbaugh wanted elite defensive minds for his Los Angeles Chargers, and he raided Pittsburgh to get one. Denzel Martin, the outside linebackers coach who helped mold T.J. Watt into a generational terror with a record-tying 22.5 sacks in a single season, is packing his bags. Martin joins the Chargers as their assistant outside linebackers coach. He reunites with former Steelers linebacker Sean Spence on Harbaugh’s defensive staff.

Offensive turnover hit the Steelers just as hard. Zach Azzanni, the demanding wide receivers coach who brought ruthless accountability to George Pickens over the last two years, is heading to the desert. The Las Vegas Raiders snagged Azzanni to fill the exact same role under new head coach Klint Kubiak. Azzanni steps into his 10th NFL season tasked with fixing a Raiders passing attack that sputtered badly in 2025.

    The James Daniels Dilemma

Miami pulled the plug. The Dolphins released former Steelers guard James Daniels on Monday to clear $6.5 million in 2027 cap space. Daniels signed a lucrative three-year deal with Miami in 2025 free agency, but disaster struck immediately. A torn pectoral muscle in the season opener limited the 28-year-old veteran to just three total snaps in a Dolphins uniform.

This follows his 2024 season in Pittsburgh, which ended abruptly due to a ruptured Achilles. Two massive injuries in consecutive years vaporized his market value. A team willing to gamble might sign him for pennies on the dollar, but a reunion in Pittsburgh requires clearing massive medical hurdles first. The human element here is tough to swallow; Daniels is a trench warrior who simply cannot catch a break with his health.

AFC North Rivalry: Bitonio’s Clock Ticks

Over in Cleveland, the Browns bought themselves a little breathing room. The front office pushed back the void date on Joel Bitonio’s contract, giving the 34-year-old legendary guard extra weeks to decide on retirement. Bitonio survived the 2024 offensive collapse and thrived last year, but the tread on the tires is wearing thin. The Browns hope new head coach Todd Monken can convince the veteran to anchor the offensive line for a 13th season. If he walks away, Cleveland swallows a massive $23.5 million dead cap hit.

“Truthfully, I didn’t want that taste in my mouth. I want to go out there and compete and play meaningful games again.”
    — Joel Bitonio, Cleveland Browns All-Pro Guard

    Playoff Implications / What’s Next

The clock is ticking for Pittsburgh’s front office. With the franchise tag window officially opening this week, the cost of doing business is set. If a team wants to lock down a premium edge rusher, the 2026 defensive end tag sits at a staggering $27.32 million, while the linebacker tag checks in at $28.2 million.

Tomlin must quickly replace Martin’s developmental magic on the edge. Nick Herbig broke out for 7.5 sacks last year under Martin’s guidance. Without that veteran coaching anchor, Pittsburgh’s lethal pass rush faces a steep transition period right as the AFC North arms race escalates. The Steelers need to finalize their coaching staff immediately to shift focus toward navigating a ballooning 2026 salary cap and finding fresh talent in the draft.
