Saints Star Alontae Taylor Linked to NFC Rival in 2026 Free Agency Shakeup

NEW ORLEANS — The clock is ticking on Alontae Taylor’s time in the Big Easy, and the alarm bells are ringing louder than a third-down siren in the Superdome. With the 2026 free agency window just weeks away, the New Orleans Saints’ secondary standout isn’t just testing the waters—he’s being pushed toward a massive payday that Mickey Loomis might not be able to match. The latest bombshell? ESPN’s Matt Bowen has pinpointed the Los Angeles Rams as the prime landing spot for the 27-year-old corner, a move that would pair him with Sean McVay’s squad fresh off their heartbreaking NFC Championship loss to Seattle.

    The $30 Million Question Mark

Taylor didn’t just play out his rookie contract; he exploded through the ceiling of it. In a 2025 season where the Saints’ defense often felt like a sieve, Taylor was the duct tape holding it together. He racked up 83 tackles, 2 interceptions, and 2.0 sacks, proving he can blitz off the edge just as well as he can blanket a slot receiver. He’s gritty, he’s violent, and he’s exactly the kind of “versatile chess piece” modern defenses crave.

That versatility is why Bowen ranked him the 12th-best overall free agent in the 2026 class. The Rams, whose secondary got scorched by Sam Darnold (yes, really) and the Seahawks in the playoffs, are desperate for speed. Taylor runs a 4.36 and plays faster. If Los Angeles clears the cap space, they could offer Taylor a deal that eclipses the $13-15 million APY mark—a figure New Orleans, perpetually wrestling with salary cap voodoo, likely can’t touch.

“It’s going to be a process. There’s going to be a lot of buzz… I think going to continue to pray about it. Continue to keep God first… I love this city. It feels good whenever I go around the community and see kids doing my thumbs down celebration… So to leave, if that’s what it comes down to, it would be tough.”
    — Alontae Taylor, New Orleans Saints Cornerback

    Chicago and Vegas Lurking

While the Rams are the sexy pick, don’t sleep on the Chicago Bears. Former Saints head coach Dennis Allen is running the show in the Windy City, and he drafted Taylor back in 2022. The familiarity factor is huge. If the Bears want to recreate that NOLA secondary magic to support their playoff push, writing a check for Taylor is the easiest way to do it. The Las Vegas Raiders also have a glaring need at corner and the cap space to overpay, making this a three-horse race that leaves the Saints playing catch-up.

    Free Agency Outlook

New Orleans is staring down the barrel of a full defensive rebuild. Losing Taylor leaves a crater in the slot that a mid-round rookie simply can’t fill immediately. If Taylor walks when the market opens in March, the Saints lose their attitude setter. For the Rams, adding Taylor could be the final piece to get Matthew Stafford one last ring before he rides off into the sunset. The bidding war is about to get ugly.
