Diego Pavia vs. The NFL: Vandy Star Battles “Shocking” Draft Slide & Size Concerns

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Diego Pavia just dragged Vanderbilt to a 10-win season. He threw for nearly 3,600 yards. He finished second in the Heisman voting. But if you ask NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay, none of that matters when the clock starts ticking in April.

The “Pavia Magic” that captivated the SEC in 2025 has hit a cold, hard wall of NFL skepticism. Despite receiving an invite to the NFL Combine last week, the Vanderbilt quarterback is fighting a narrative that he’s simply too small, too old, and too chaotic for the pros.

The Stats Don’t Match the Scout Grade

On paper, Pavia is a monster. He torched defenses for 29 passing touchdowns and added another 10 scores on the ground last season. He didn’t just manage games; he hijacked them. Under his command, the Commodores posted a 10-3 record, narrowly missing the College Football Playoff but securing the program’s best finish in decades.

But NFL scouts don’t draft college stats. They draft frames and futures. At the Senior Bowl earlier this month, Pavia officially measured in at 5-foot-9 and 7/8 inches. That number set off alarm bells in war rooms across the league. In the modern era, only Kyler Murray and Bryce Young have been drafted high with similar measurements, and both had elite, undeniable traits that scouts argue Pavia lacks.

The tension boiled over on the “Triple Option” podcast, where Todd McShay dropped a hammer on Pavia’s draft stock. He didn’t mince words about the SEC Offensive Player of the Year.

“I’m not drafting [Pavia] in the NFL. I’ll be shocked if he’s an NFL starter. I don’t even know how much value you have as a backup if I’m being completely honest… I hate the fact that that might be the end of his career because he’s just a really good football player.”
    — Todd McShay, NFL Draft Analyst

Pavia, never one to back down from a fight, fired back with the same irrational confidence that fueled his rise from New Mexico Military Institute to SEC stardom.

“A hundred percent [I’ll be drafted]. When has the last SEC Player of the Year not been drafted? I feel like I’m the best player in the country, and I still believe that.”

    The “Red Flag” Factor

It’s not just the height. Teams are reportedly cooling on Pavia due to a mix of age and maturity concerns. He will be a 25-year-old rookie, significantly older than fellow prospects. Combine that with the “controversial off-field behavior” alluded to during the awards circuit—including social media outbursts—and you have a prospect who forces GMs to ask: Is the juice worth the squeeze?

Pavia has hired quarterback guru Darrell Colbert to refine his footwork, hoping to prove that his mechanics can compensate for his lack of verticality. He needs to show elite processing speed in Indianapolis next week to have a chance at hearing his name called on Day 3.

    What’s Next: The Combine Gauntlet

The NFL Combine in Indianapolis is now a do-or-die arena for Pavia. He doesn’t need to run the fastest 40-yard dash; he needs to throw with surgical precision over 6-foot-4 linemen during drills.

If he shines, a team like the Broncos or Rams might take a late-round flier on his playmaking spark. If he struggles, McShay’s prediction of a UFL future might become a harsh reality. One thing is certain: Diego Pavia has spent his entire career proving people wrong. He’s got one more chance to do it again.
