CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Former New York Jets first-round pick and Ohio State standout Darron Lee remains behind bars without bond today after a Tennessee judge heard gruesome testimony regarding the murder of his girlfriend, Gabriella Carvalho Perpétuo.

In a chilling hearing on Wednesday at the Hamilton County Criminal Court, prosecutors revealed forensic evidence suggesting Perpétuo was beaten, stabbed, and bitten before Lee allegedly attempted to stage the scene. District Attorney Coty Wamp confirmed her office is considering seeking the death penalty, citing “aggravating factors” in the brutality of the crime.

“Glass Everywhere”: Inside the Ooltewah Crime Scene

Hamilton County Sheriff’s Detective Brian Lockhart took the stand to describe the chaotic scene investigators found on February 5 at the couple’s rental home in Ooltewah, a suburb of Chattanooga. While Lee initially told detectives that Perpétuo, who suffered from narcolepsy, had “fallen in the shower,” the physical evidence told a violent counter-narrative.

“The microwave was shattered,” Lockhart testified, describing the residence as being in total disarray. “There was glass everywhere. There were alcoholic bottles everywhere in the house.”

More damning was the forensic walkthrough. Lockhart described a “widespread blood scene” that contradicted Lee’s claims of a simple fall. Investigators found blood spatter on the walls, the living room floor, the upstairs hallway, and the handrail of the staircase. When detectives deployed a forensic blue light to detect cleaned fluids, the hallway “lit up blue,” revealing drag marks leading into the bathroom.

According to Lockhart, investigators also recovered blood evidence from inside Lee’s BMW.

Forensic Nightmare: “Pants Put On After”

The state’s case intensified when Lockhart detailed the autopsy findings. Perpétuo suffered a broken neck, severe brain trauma, and a distinct human bite mark on her shoulder. Investigators also found stab wounds on her legs—crucially, the pants she was wearing had no corresponding cuts, leading prosecutors to allege she was dressed after the attack to cover up the wounds.

“Mr. Lee was in a home with a female that was, for lack of a better term, beaten to death. And the explanation that he gave doesn’t make any sense whatsoever.” — Coty Wamp, Hamilton County District Attorney

Judge Tori Smith denied bail immediately following the testimony. Lee, 31, stood silent during the proceedings, represented by public defender Mike Little.

From The Horseshoe to a Jail Cell

The charges mark a catastrophic fall for Lee, once a celebrated linebacker who helped Ohio State win the 2014 National Championship before being selected 20th overall by the Jets in 2016. His NFL career fizzled after stints with the Chiefs and Bills, ending in 2020. His post-football life has been marred by legal trouble, including a plea deal last year for a separate domestic violence incident in Ohio.

    What’s Next

Lee is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on March 9. The District Attorney’s office is expected to announce a formal decision regarding the death penalty pursuit in the coming weeks. If convicted of first-degree murder, Lee faces life in prison or lethal injection.
