OOLTEWAH, Tenn. — The post-NFL spiral of former first-round pick Darron Lee hit a tragic, violent bottom last week. Hamilton County police charged the 31-year-old former linebacker with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence in the death of his girlfriend, identified as 29-year-old Gabriella Perpetuo.
Lee remains locked up without bond at the Hamilton County Jail & Detention Center. He faces a judge tomorrow, Wednesday, Feb. 11.
The Scene: ‘Inconsistent’ Stories and Broken Glass
Police arrived at the home on Snow Cone Way last Thursday afternoon to a chaotic scene. The initial call reported “CPR in progress.” First responders found Perpetuo unresponsive. They couldn’t save her.
Detectives didn’t buy Lee’s story. According to the affidavit obtained by local outlets, Lee claimed Perpetuo “fell in the shower.” The evidence screamed otherwise.
Investigators found a home in disarray: broken glass in the kitchen, blood splatter on the walls, and cleaning supplies stashed in “abnormal places.” The autopsy revealed Perpetuo suffered a stab wound to the abdomen, severe bruising, and what appeared to be a human bite mark on her shoulder. Police allege Lee attempted to clean up the blood before they arrived.
From Sugar Bowl MVP to Inmate
“Due to the condition of the victim and the residence… preliminary findings indicate the victim’s death was the result of a homicide.” — Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office Statement
Lee’s fall from grace has been steep. The New York Jets drafted him 20th overall in 2016 out of Ohio State, where he was a star on the 2014 National Championship team. He possessed elite speed for a linebacker. He flashed potential. But he never anchored the defense.
After the Jets cut ties, Lee bounced around. He won a Super Bowl ring with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020 (Super Bowl LIV) but was inactive for the game itself. Brief stops with the Buffalo Bills and Las Vegas Raiders followed. He hasn’t played a snap in years.
This isn’t his first brush with the law. Lee faced domestic violence and assault charges in 2023, signaling a volatile pattern long before last week’s tragedy.
What’s Next
Lee appears in court tomorrow. Prosecutors will likely leverage the tampering charge — the alleged cleanup attempt — to argue premeditation or consciousness of guilt. If convicted of first-degree murder in Tennessee, the former linebacker faces life in prison.
A GoFundMe set up for Perpetuo’s family describes her as a “victim to domestic violence” who was “loved by so many.”
