Buffalo Bills Promote Joe Brady to Head Coach on 5-Year Deal

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills have their man, and he was already in the building. On Tuesday, the Bills officially promoted offensive coordinator Joe Brady to head coach, signaling a commitment to the “Everybody Eats” philosophy that revitalized the franchise. Brady, 36, signed a five-year contract to become the 21st head coach in team history, replacing Sean McDermott after a decade of defensive-led football.

Why the Bills Bet on Brady

The search didn’t take long. After firing McDermott on Jan. 19 following a heartbreaking Divisional Round exit to the Denver Broncos, General Manager Brandon Beane interviewed nine candidates. In the end, the bond between the coach and his superstar quarterback won out. Josh Allen, who sat on the official search committee, played the best football of his career under Brady’s tutelage, including an MVP campaign in 2024.

Brady’s impact on the field is undeniable. In 2025, Buffalo’s offense wasn’t just productive; it was dominant. The Bills finished 1st in rushing (159.6 yards per game) and 1st in time of possession (33:08). They didn’t just move the chains; they controlled the clock and punished defenses with a balanced attack. Under Brady’s watch, James Cook exploded for 1,621 rushing yards, becoming the first Bill to lead the NFL in rushing since O.J. Simpson in 1976.

The numbers from 2024 are even more historic. That season, Buffalo became the first team in NFL history to record at least 30 rushing and 30 receiving touchdowns in a single year. Brady proved he could win without a clear-cut “WR1” after the Stefon Diggs trade, spreading the ball so effectively that 13 different players caught touchdowns that season.

“Joe gets it. He doesn’t just call plays; he understands how we see the game. We’ve built something special here over the last two years, and keeping that continuity means we aren’t starting over. We’re finishing the job.” — Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills Quarterback

    Breaking the Playoff Wall

The move isn’t just about stats; it’s about a culture shift. Owner Terry Pegula noted after firing McDermott that the team had hit a “provisional playoff wall.” Buffalo has qualified for the postseason in seven straight seasons but has struggled to close out tight games in January. Their last three playoff losses were decided by exactly three points.

By promoting Brady, the Bills are betting that an aggressive, modern offensive mind is the key to finally lifting the Lombardi Trophy. Brady’s rise has been meteoric. From the architect of LSU’s legendary 2019 offense to a young coordinator in Carolina, and finally the steady hand in Buffalo, he has spent his career preparing for this moment.

The transition starts immediately. While the Bills are the 10th and final NFL team to fill their vacancy this cycle, they enter the 2026 offseason with the most stability of any team with a new leader. With a new $2.1 billion stadium on the horizon and Josh Allen entering his prime at age 30, the Joe Brady era represents a “Super Bowl or bust” mandate from the front office.
