REPORT: Chargers Target Ravens DC Zach Orr to Replace Jesse Minter

LOS ANGELES — The Harbaugh coaching pipeline just turned into a high-stakes game of musical chairs. Hours after the Baltimore Ravens stunned the league by hiring Jesse Minter as their new head coach, the Los Angeles Chargers fired back. Sources tell ESPN that L.A. has formally requested to interview Ravens Defensive Coordinator Zach Orr to fill the very vacancy Minter left behind.

Jim Harbaugh isn’t looking far for a replacement. He’s looking directly at the roster his brother built.

    The Minter Void

Losing Minter is a gut punch for Los Angeles. Under his command, the Chargers’ defense transformed from a liability into a fortress, allowing a league-best 17.7 points per game in 2024 and suffocating opponents in the red zone. Minter didn’t just call plays; he instilled a physical, disciplined identity that defined the Chargers’ resurgence.

Chargers have requested Ravens defensive coordinator Zach Orr to interview for their vacant DC job, per source. Orr spent the past two seasons in charge of Baltimore’s defense and previously worked alongside former Chargers DC Jesse Minter.

Now, Minter takes those blueprints back to Baltimore, where he previously served as a defensive assistant, to sit in the big chair. That leaves Jim Harbaugh with a championship-caliber roster but no defensive architect.

    Why Zach Orr?

Zach Orr isn’t just a “good option”—he’s the logical successor. At 33, Orr has spent the last two seasons proving he is one of the brightest young defensive minds in football. Stepping into the massive shoes of Mike Macdonald in 2024, Orr didn’t flinch. His unit led the NFL in rush defense (allowing just 80.1 yards per game) and racked up 54 sacks, terrorizing quarterbacks with disguised blitz packages that would feel right at home in Los Angeles.

Orr fits the Chargers’ mold perfectly: intense, player-focused, and schematically aggressive. As a former All-Pro linebacker whose career was cut short by injury, he commands a level of locker room respect that few coaches can match. He doesn’t just teach the game; he lives it through his players.

“He’s 10 toes down. He’s the same energetic guy every day, just with a different title. When a guy stands on what he believes in, you respect that. We’d run through a wall for him.” — Roquan Smith, Ravens Linebacker (on Zach Orr)

    The Harbaugh Shuffle

This potential hire adds another layer to the intricate web of the Harbaugh family tree. Minter goes from Jim to Baltimore. Orr could go from Baltimore to Jim. Both franchises are betting on the same defensive DNA—hard-hitting, complex, and relentless.

If Orr accepts the job, he inherits a Chargers defense loaded with talent but needing a new voice. The question isn’t whether Orr is ready; it’s whether Baltimore lets him walk without a fight.
