Foxborough, Dec. 31 – The NFL MVP race often comes down to who can deliver when the lights are brightest in December. While Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford stumbled in prime time on Monday, New England Patriots signal-caller Drake Maye produced a masterpiece that has vaulted him into the driver’s seat for the league’s highest individual honor.

Maye didn’t just beat the New York Jets in Sunday’s 42-10 obliteration; he dissected them with surgical precision. Leading the Patriots to touchdowns on their first six drives, Maye was nearly flawless, finishing 19-of-21 for 256 yards and a career-high five touchdowns. His 157.0 passer rating was near-perfect, but the history books were the real winner: Maye became the first quarterback in NFL history to record a 90-plus percent completion rate, 250-plus passing yards, and 5-plus touchdowns in a single game.

The victory secured the AFC East title for New England and kept their hopes for the No. 1 seed alive. It also cemented a perfect 8-0 road record for the season—a feat no other team accomplished in 2025.

To commemorate the team’s road dominance, head coach Mike Vrabel decided to get creative—literally. Vrabel presented Maye with a unique game ball, one the coach admitted to constructing himself using “a lot of tape and paper.”

“It was just a pretty special performance,” Vrabel said. “That was one that I had constructed… I did arts and crafts on it. That was all our road wins on the ball that I had taped on there. So, he better bring it in here, and he better put it in the quarterback room because I put a lot of time and effort into that thing.”

The gesture was lighthearted, but the sentiment was serious. Vrabel noted that he had decided the night before to give the ball to the “player of the game,” and Maye’s historic afternoon made him the undeniable recipient.

Maye’s ascension to the top of the MVP conversation is backed by elite production. With 4,203 passing yards through 16 games, he has joined Tom Brady and Drew Bledsoe as the only Patriots quarterbacks to eclipse the 4,000-yard mark. More importantly, he is playing efficient, winning football; he currently leads the NFL in completion percentage (71.7), yards per attempt (8.9), and passer rating (112.9).

While Stafford’s three-interception nightmare against Atlanta opened the door, Maye kicked it down. He has been the catalyst for New England’s 13-3 record, transforming them from a rebuilding franchise into a Super Bowl heavyweight.

“It’s kind of fitting that Drake had the performance that he had… certainly the day that he had and what he’s done so far for us. So, we’ll need a lot of those efforts from him to continue.” – Mike Vrabel, Patriots Head Coach

Vrabel’s comments underscore the reality in New England: the “Patriot Way” has evolved. It is now driven by the high-octane efficiency of their young quarterback, and the team will go exactly as far as his right arm can take them.

Drake Maye has turned a potentially close MVP race into a showcase of his own dominance. With one week left in the regular season, the narrative has shifted from “who might win” to “who can possibly catch him?” As the Patriots gear up for a playoff run, they do so knowing they have the best player in football under center.
