Packers Turn to Malik Willis as Concussion Sidelines Jordan Love

GREEN BAY, Wis., Dec. 28 – The Green Bay Packers can finally breathe a sigh of relief, their playoff ticket punched on Thursday night thanks to a divisional rival’s stumble. But the celebration will be muted on the Lambeau Field sidelines this Saturday. The team confirmed on Friday that quarterback Jordan Love, their steady hand through a grueling season has been ruled out of the Week 17 clash against the Baltimore Ravens as he remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol.

The news is a somber note in what should be a celebratory week, inserting a layer of uncertainty into a game that still holds significant implications for the NFC North crown.

Love’s status had been the central drama in Green Bay since he left the Week 16 defeat to the Chicago Bears with a concussion. Hope flickered when he returned to the practice field on Tuesday, albeit in a limited capacity, but the rigorous nature of the league’s protocol proved too high a hurdle to clear in a short week.

The setback means the Packers will turn to Malik Willis. The backup has his own injury concerns, having been listed as questionable with a shoulder issue and an illness, but is expected to be under center when the Ravens come to town. He stepped in for Love against the Bears, only to suffer a right shoulder injury at the end of regulation in the overtime loss.

The quarterback carousel won’t be exclusive to the home sideline. The Ravens are slated to start Tyler Huntley, with their own MVP candidate, Lamar Jackson, listed as doubtful with a back contusion.

Despite clinching a postseason berth after Detroit’s loss to Minnesota, Saturday’s game is far from a meaningless exhibition for Green Bay. A Packers loss to Baltimore would hand the NFC North division title to the Bears, adding a bitter aftertaste to their playoff qualification.

For a team that has relied on Love’s efficient production he’s completed over 66% of his passes for nearly 3,400 yards and 23 touchdowns in 15 starts his absence is a significant blow. The Packers’ offense will now need to find its rhythm with Willis, a talented but less experienced signal-caller, against a Ravens defense hungry to play spoiler.

However, the context speaks for itself. The team’s official announcement and the reporting from NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero underscore the seriousness with which the franchise is treating Love’s head injury, prioritizing his long-term health over a single regular-season game, even one with divisional title stakes.

The Packers enter Week 17 in a strange limbo: secure in their postseason future but suddenly vulnerable in the present. Saturday night at Lambeau will be a test of their depth and resilience. While the immediate pressure of making the playoffs is gone, the fight for divisional supremacy and the momentum that comes with it now rests on the shoulders of Malik Willis.
