GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Former NFL and UFL cornerback Chris Payton-Jones died at 30 after a head-on collision Saturday night on State Road 24. Payton-Jones drove eastbound in the westbound lanes, struck a pickup truck, flipped, and his sedan burst into flames. First responders pronounced him dead at the scene. The three people in the truck suffered only minor injuries.

Wrong-Way Crash Claims Jacksonville Football Star Turned Content Creator

Payton-Jones, a Jacksonville native who starred at Sandalwood High School, played four seasons in the NFL after going undrafted in 2018. He appeared in 29 regular-season games with the Arizona Cardinals, Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings and Tennessee Titans. The defensive back later suited up for the Seattle Sea Dragons in the XFL in 2023 before spending the past two seasons with the St. Louis Battlehawks in the UFL.

He retired in January 2026 and poured everything into his full-time content creation business. His YouTube channel, Flashflix, already tops one million views on sports videos shot mostly around Jacksonville high school fields. Payton-Jones spent his off-seasons mentoring young videographers chasing their own shot in sports media. You could spot him on Friday nights along the sidelines, camera in hand, hyping up the next generation the same way he once locked down receivers.

The crash happened just after 11:45 p.m. near Northeast 53rd Terrace. Florida Highway Patrol confirmed Payton-Jones traveled the wrong direction before impact. The pickup truck overturned, but its occupants walked away with bumps and bruises.

Playoff Implications / What’s Next

Payton-Jones leaves behind more than tackles and passes defensed. The UFL called him “a beloved teammate and leader in the locker room” who showed “hard work, determination, and resilience” every day — and “a bright soul who everyone enjoyed spending time with off the field.” His sudden loss hits the Jacksonville football community especially hard. Coaches who watched him grow from three-star prospect to pro say he stayed grounded, kept showing up for kids, and never stopped pushing.

His Flashflix channel will keep rolling, but the real impact lives in the young creators he mentored and the players he inspired. The football world lost a guy who attacked every rep like it mattered — because to him, it always did. Tributes continue to pour in from former teammates, Nebraska Huskers, and local high school programs. Payton-Jones, 30, is survived by family, including a young son, and a legacy that stretches far beyond the numbers he put up on Sundays.
