Raiders Set to Bet It All on Fernando Mendoza After Flawless Pro Day

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Fernando Mendoza didn’t just throw on Wednesday; he put on a clinic. The Heisman Trophy winner didn’t miss a single target during his Indiana Pro Day, effectively ending any debate about who the Las Vegas Raiders will take with the No. 1 overall pick later this month. After a 16-0 season that brought a national title to Bloomington, Mendoza looked every bit the franchise savior Vegas desperately needs.

    The Perfect Audition in Bloomington

The scouts held their breath as Mendoza worked through his script. He hit every level of the field with a mix of touch and raw velocity. Raiders owner Mark Davis and minority owner Tom Brady watched from the sidelines as the 6-foot-5, 225-pound signal-caller ripped 60-yard bombs and zipped 15-yard outs with laser precision. He finished the day without a single ball touching the turf.

This performance comes just days after the Raiders cleared the deck for a new era. By shipping Geno Smith back to the New York Jets for a late-round swap, Vegas signaled they are done with stop-gap solutions. Smith struggled through a 2025 campaign defined by turnovers and missed opportunities, leaving the Raiders offense stuck in neutral. Mendoza, fresh off throwing 41 touchdowns and only six interceptions for the Hoosiers, represents the polar opposite of the Smith era.

    • Accuracy: Completed 72% of his passes in the 2025 season.
    • Winning Pedigree: Led Indiana to its first-ever 16-0 championship run.
    • Physicality: Accounted for 7 rushing touchdowns, including a gritty fourth-down score in the title game.

“I came here to show that the stats weren’t a fluke. I can make every throw in the book, and I’m ready to lead an NFL huddle from Day 1. The work doesn’t stop until we’re lifting another trophy in February.”
    — Fernando Mendoza, Indiana Quarterback

A New Powerhouse in the Desert

The Raiders didn’t just wait for the draft to fix their problems. The front office got aggressive in free agency, landing Tyler Linderbaum to anchor the offensive line. Providing a young quarterback with the best center in football is a veteran move that should mitigate the usual rookie struggles. Mendoza will also inherit a wealth of skill talent that Smith failed to maximize.

Tight end Brock Bowers is already a top-three player at his position, and running back Ashton Jeanty is coming off a massive 2025 rookie season. Jeanty racked up nearly 1,000 yards on the ground and proved to be a dual-threat weapon with five receiving scores. With Mendoza’s ability to layer vertical shots, the box should stay light for Jeanty, and the middle of the field will open up for Bowers. The Raiders aren’t just rebuilding; they are loading up for a run in a crowded AFC West.
