The Return of RGIII

Griffin joins a 24-man pool invited to the U.S. national team training camp in Chula Vista next month. While he hasn’t taken a competitive NFL snap since 2020, Griffin looked sharp during recent trials in Los Angeles. He displayed the same flick-of-the-wrist arm talent that once electrified Washington fans. This isn’t just a publicity stunt. Griffin outperformed several younger athletes to earn his invitation, proving his speed still poses a threat in the non-contact format.

The energy at the trials was electric. You could feel the shift in the air when Griffin stepped onto the turf. Fans who remembered his breakout 2012 season cheered as he connected on a 40-yard post route that looked effortless. Even at 36, his competitive fire burns bright. He isn’t just showing up; he wants to lead this team to the podium.

“The journey starts now and there is no greater honor than wearing USA across your chest and representing something more than yourself. The work is just getting started. I’m ready to go for gold.”
— Robert Griffin III, Team USA Quarterback Candidate

From the Booth to the Field

Since his last stint with the Baltimore Ravens, Griffin has been a fixture on Fox Sports and ESPN. However, the itch to compete never left. This comeback follows a massive showing at the Fanatics Flag Football Classic last week, where Team USA’s elite squad dismantled a team of NFL legends 43-16. That lopsided score sent a message: flag football requires a different kind of conditioning and spatial awareness than the tackle game. Griffin has spent the last year quietly training for this transition, focusing on the quick-twitch movements vital for the 5-on-5 game.

The road to LA28 remains crowded. Cincinnati Bengals star Joe Burrow also expressed interest in the Olympic squad, suggesting a potential “Dream Team” scenario. But for now, Griffin has the head start. He will report to training camp on April 16 to battle for a final roster spot for this summer’s World Championships in Germany.

Human Interest: While Griffin celebrated his selection, the trials also featured a heart-tugging moment from 66-year-old Hall of Famer Darrell Green. The legendary “Ageless Wonder” attempted to make the squad, and though he fell short, his presence reminded everyone why football belongs on the Olympic stage—it’s about the timeless love of the game.
