Bengals Go Defense-Heavy: 7-Round 2026 NFL Mock Draft Breakdown

CINCINNATI — The Bengals aren’t waiting for the defense to fix itself. After a surgical free agency that landed Boye Mafe, Bryan Cook, and Jonathan Allen, Duke Tobin just hammered the “reset” button on the unit’s speed. Cincinnati is moving away from the “bend but don’t break” philosophy and toward a high-velocity, playmaking identity that fits the modern AFC North. This mock draft isn’t about depth; it’s about finding the missing teeth for a defense that needs more bite.

The New Anchor in the Secondary

In this latest PFF 2026 NFL Mock Draft simulation, the Bengals missed out on Caleb Downs but landed a terrifying consolation prize at Pick 10: Oregon safety Dillon Thieneman. Walking through the tunnel at Paycor Stadium, you can feel the shift. Fans want a predator in the deep third, and Thieneman is exactly that. He didn’t just participate in the NFL Combine; he conquered it. Clocking a 4.35-second 40-yard dash and leaping for a 41-inch vertical, his measurables are off the charts.

Thieneman isn’t just a track star. He produced 306 tackles and eight interceptions over three seasons, showing he can track the ball like a center fielder. While some critics argue 10 is high for a safety, Thieneman’s versatility to play the slot or a single-high role makes him a “chess piece” for Lou Anarumo. He’s the type of athlete who makes a quarterback double-think every deep shot.

“We need guys who hunt. Talent is great, but we’re looking for high-motor players who can change the scoreboard on defense. You see what some of these young guys are doing in college right now, and it’s about that relentless energy.”
    — Zac Taylor, Bengals Head Coach

The intensity doesn’t stop in the first round. In the second, at Pick 41, the Bengals grabbed Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Rodriguez. He is the definition of a “football player” over a “prospect.” Despite a 4.57 40-yard dash, his tape is a clinic in diagnostic speed. Between 2024 and 2025, he racked up 255 tackles and forced 10 fumbles. He is the glue. Pairing him with 2026 free-agent addition Jonathan Allen gives Cincinnati a nasty interior presence that hasn’t existed since the peak of the Mike Zimmer era.

    Late-Round Flyers and High-Upside Risks

Cincinnati stayed aggressive in the trenches with Gracen Halton (Round 3), an undersized pass-rush specialist from Oklahoma. At 293 pounds, he’s slippery enough to exploit the gaps Allen and B.J. Hill create. Finally, the offense got a weapon in Round 4 with TE Michael Trigg. At 6-foot-4, he’s essentially a jumbo receiver. If Joe Burrow can polish Trigg’s route running, the Bengals have their first true mismatch at tight end since Tyler Eifert.

The draft concluded with a fascinating gamble: Harold Perkins (Round 7). Once a top-10 lock, a 2024 knee injury cooled his stock. However, a 4.40 Pro Day in Baton Rouge suggests the explosiveness is back. For a seventh-round pick, getting a former five-star recruit with his ceiling is a robbery.

    Playoff Implications / What’s Next

The 2026 season is a “prove-it” year for this defensive coaching staff. Adding Thieneman and Rodriguez to a group that already features Mafe and Cook creates a secondary and linebacker corps with elite range. The Bengals are betting that young, cheap talent can supplement a high-priced offense. If these picks hit, Cincinnati isn’t just a playoff contender—they are the favorites to reclaim the AFC North throne. The next step? Rookie minicamps in May where we’ll see if Thieneman’s 4.35 speed looks as real in stripes as it did in Eugene.
