LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Chargers officially signed veteran guard Kayode Awosika on Wednesday, providing a versatile insurance policy for an offensive front that spent much of 2025 in the medical tent. The addition comes as Jim Harbaugh continues a massive overhaul of the interior line just ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Building the Wall for Justin Herbert

Awosika joins the Bolts after a productive stint with the Detroit Lions. While he entered the league as an undrafted free agent with Philadelphia, he found his footing in Detroit, appearing in 50 career games with 11 starts. Last season, Awosika stepped up when the Lions needed him most, logging a career-high 286 offensive snaps and starting four games. His ability to slide between both guard spots—and even fill in at tackle—makes him a valuable asset for a Chargers team that learned the hard way about the cost of poor depth last year.

The 2026 season represents a fresh start for the Los Angeles trenches. With stars Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt returning from season-ending injuries, the team has been aggressive in finding new interior pieces. Awosika joins a revamped room that now features Pro Bowl center Tyler Biadasz and former first-rounders Cole Strange and Trevor Penning. This group will operate under new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, whose zone-heavy scheme requires the kind of lateral mobility Awosika displayed in Detroit.

There is also a personal connection in the building. Awosika is a University at Buffalo alumnus, a fact that surely caught the eye of Chargers legend Khalil Mack. Mack, also a Buffalo standout, recently returned to the Bolts on an extension, and the “Bulls” connection adds a layer of locker room chemistry to this mid-market signing.

“We weren’t good enough as a team last year, and that starts with me. It will be a new beginning. We are going to find guys who are tough, who love ball, and who can protect our quarterback at all costs.”
— Jim Harbaugh, Chargers Head Coach

Draft Strategy and the 2026 Outlook

The Chargers are clearly prioritizing experience this offseason. By securing Awosika, Biadasz, and Strange before the draft, General Manager Joe Hortiz has given the team flexibility at the No. 22 overall pick. Los Angeles no longer has to reach for a starter on day one, though many experts believe the team could still look for a high-ceiling guard to round out the unit. After falling to the Patriots 16-3 in a frustrating Wild Card exit last January, the mission is simple: keep Justin Herbert upright and establish the physical identity Harbaugh demands.
