PITTSBURGH — Damar Hamlin didn’t just celebrate his 28th birthday with family this week; he celebrated by giving his hometown a $15,000 annual commitment. On Monday, the Buffalo Bills safety and McKees Rocks native returned to his alma mater, Central Catholic High School in Oakland, to announce the local expansion of his “Heroes Scholarship” program. The move marks a full-circle moment for a player whose life was forever changed on a Cincinnati field three years ago.

Investing in the 412: Central Catholic and Beyond

The expansion, facilitated through Hamlin’s Chasing M’s Foundation, will provide 10 scholarships of $1,000 each every year to students attending Central Catholic. Recognizing the diverse career paths of Pittsburgh youth, Hamlin also allocated five $1,000 scholarships for area students pursuing trade or vocational schools. The crowd in the gymnasium—a mix of wide-eyed students and local leaders—felt the weight of the moment as Hamlin stood just feet away from where he once played high school ball. Applications for the 2026 cycle are officially open and will close on May 1.

The atmosphere was electric as Hamlin walked through the halls. The scent of floor wax and the echoes of cheering students provided a nostalgic backdrop for the NFL veteran. This isn’t just about the money; it’s about the “Kyle B. Wilson Scholarship” that Hamlin himself received years ago, which made his own education at Central Catholic possible. Without that initial investment, his journey to the University of Pittsburgh and eventually the NFL might have looked very different.

“Someone saw something in me before the world did, and now I’m in the position to do the same. Driving here this morning, I got a little emotional realizing what I was about to do. We want to support people alongside whatever their passions are—whether that’s a classroom or a trade.”
    — Damar Hamlin, Buffalo Bills Safety

Honoring the Saviors and Looking Ahead

The “Heroes Scholarship” is more than a philanthropic effort; it is a living tribute. The program specifically honors the 10 medical professionals who saved Hamlin’s life after his cardiac arrest in January 2023. By expanding this initiative from Cincinnati and Buffalo to Pittsburgh, Hamlin is ensuring that his legacy is tied to the survival and success of others. Pittsburgh Mayor Corey O’Connor, a 2002 Central Catholic alum, stood by Hamlin, noting that this investment will reshape Western Pennsylvania by supporting families who are often overlooked in traditional academic funding.

As the 2026 NFL free agency period continues to swirl with rumors regarding Hamlin’s next contract, his focus remains grounded in McKees Rocks and the Greater Pittsburgh area. While his stats on the field remain a point of discussion for Bills fans, his impact off the field has already achieved “Legend” status in the Steel City. The foundation’s next goal? A dedicated Youth Empowerment Center in McKees Rocks, further solidifying Hamlin’s role as the city’s most dedicated hometown hero.
