SANTA CLARA — The San Francisco 49ers and Brandon Aiyuk are locked in a cold war that only has one exit strategy. After a 2025 season where Aiyuk didn’t play a single snap, the star receiver’s future in the Bay Area has reached a breaking point. The organization stripped his 2026 guarantees months ago, and now the front office is reportedly waiting for a trade partner to blink as the draft approaches.

The Weight Room Ghost: How the Relationship Faded

The rift didn’t happen overnight. It was a slow burn that started with a devastating ACL and MCL tear in late 2024 and ended with total silence. Aiyuk spent the 2025 season on the physically unable to perform list, but his physical recovery wasn’t the only thing stalled. Communication between the receiver and the coaching staff evaporated by mid-season.

While his teammates fought through the 2025 campaign, Aiyuk became a ghost in the building. He avoided team meetings and stayed clear of the locker room. The 49ers responded in November by voiding the $27 million in guaranteed money scheduled for 2026. With no financial strings left to pull, San Francisco now holds the cards. They can keep him on the roster through the 2026 NFL Draft in April to seek a pick, or they can wait until June to maximize cap savings.

“The last I saw Aiyuk, he was kind of at training camp, kind of not. I started going out to see him in the weight room because he didn’t go into the locker room anymore. He would just go to the weight room to do his rehab. I would just talk to him and let him know, ‘Hey, I’m your guy. Just let you know I love ya.’ And then literally a week later that story came out… and then I didn’t see him again.”

Draft Leverage and the Path Forward

ESPN’s Adam Schefter clarified Wednesday that a release is not coming this week. The 49ers have already paid Aiyuk a fortune, and they aren’t interested in letting a high-caliber talent walk for nothing. The plan is to hold steady. They want to see if a receiver-needy team like the Washington Commanders or New England Patriots will offer a mid-round pick during the draft to secure his rights before he hits the open market.

Washington makes the most sense. A reunion with Jayden Daniels would provide the spark Aiyuk needs to reboot his career after two years of stagnation. However, any team trading for him will have to gamble on his health and his head. Aiyuk hasn’t played meaningful football since October 2024. If a trade doesn’t materialize by the end of April, expect a post-June 1 release that saves the 49ers roughly $16 million in cap space for the 2026 season.
