LOS ANGELES — The ultimate underdog story has reached its final chapter. Darious Williams, the cornerback who fought his way from the waiver wire to a Super Bowl ring, officially called it a career on Saturday. The Los Angeles Rams placed the 32-year-old on the reserve/retired list, bringing the Darious Williams retirement news to light after eight grueling NFL seasons.

    From Undrafted to Champion

Williams did not have a red carpet rolled out for him. Entering the league in 2018 as an undrafted free agent out of UAB, he briefly joined the Baltimore Ravens before the Rams claimed him. Over the next few years, he evolved from a special teams afterthought into an elite coverage man. He famously delivered flowers to make ends meet when UAB briefly shut down its football program. That same grit carried him straight to the pros.

He leaves the gridiron with 12 interceptions, 77 passes defensed, and 306 total tackles across 104 regular-season games. During the Rams’ historic 2021 run to the Super Bowl LVI title, Williams locked down receivers opposite Jalen Ramsey. In the title game against the Cincinnati Bengals, he led the defense with eight crucial tackles to help seal the 23-20 victory.

Fans flooded social media following the announcement, sharing gratitude for a player who gave everything on the turf. You could feel the respect pouring in from every corner of the Rams’ fanbase, celebrating a guy who simply refused to quit when the odds were stacked against him.

    Secondary Shake-Up / What’s Next

The timing of Williams stepping away creates a sudden ripple effect for the Rams’ front office heading into the thick of the 2026 offseason. Los Angeles saves roughly $7.5 million in cap space, giving general manager Les Snead extra financial ammo to retool the secondary. With newly acquired All-Pro Trent McDuffie holding down one side via a recent blockbuster trade, the Rams now face an urgent need to fill the void left by their reliable veteran.
