Steelers Weigh Shocking DK Metcalf Trade as 2026 Free Agency Looms

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers handed DK Metcalf a blockbuster $132 million contract just one year ago. Now, they might ship him out of town. As the 2026 NFL free agency window cracks open, DK Metcalf trade rumors are exploding. The massive receiver posted just 59 catches last season, and with the Steelers’ entire offensive identity suddenly up in the air, the front office is reportedly listening to offers.

The McCarthy Era and the Rodgers Ripple Effect

The Steelers are staring down a brutal reality check. Mike McCarthy just took over the headset from Mike Tomlin, inheriting an offense that sputtered late in the 2025 season. You could almost feel the tension in the air at Acrisure Stadium during their wild-card exit. The system is changing, and the roster might follow suit.

Aaron Rodgers, the 42-year-old quarterback who pulled the trigger on those passes to Metcalf, is currently dodging contract deadlines. If Rodgers walks away or signs elsewhere, Pittsburgh enters an immediate reset. According to Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon, that uncertainty makes Metcalf a prime candidate for a blockbuster deal. The logic is brutal but simple: Why pay a receiver $33 million a year if you don’t have a quarterback to get him the ball?

    The $132 Million Problem

Metcalf arrived in Pittsburgh last offseason for a second- and seventh-round pick, instantly signing a four-year extension with $60 million fully guaranteed. Fans packed the stands expecting a weekly highlight reel.

Instead, he finished 2025 with just 850 yards and six touchdowns.

For a guy built like a comic book superhero, those numbers do not justify the massive price tag. Metcalf scored 22 combined touchdowns between 2020 and 2021. Over the last four seasons? He has reached the end zone just 25 total times. If general manager Omar Khan decides to cut his losses, he has a heavy market waiting. Potential suitors reportedly include:

    • San Francisco 49ers
    • Denver Broncos
    • Washington Commanders
    • New England Patriots
    • New York Giants
    • New York Jets
    • Las Vegas Raiders

“This league doesn’t wait for anybody. You think you know who is going to be in the huddle come September, and then the front office changes the locks. We just lace up and control what we can.”
    — Steelers Veteran Insider

    Playoff Implications / What’s Next

A pre-June 1 trade only frees up about $7 million against the projected $301.2 million 2026 salary cap. Financially, that is pocket change for Khan. However, the real value lies in the draft capital. Moving Metcalf could net Pittsburgh multiple Day 2 picks. If McCarthy wants to draft and develop a young quarterback, stacking draft assets matters far more than forcing targets to a frustrated, expensive veteran receiver. The dominoes will start falling the second Aaron Rodgers makes his final call. Until then, Metcalf remains the biggest wild card of the 2026 offseason.
