49ers Lock Up Eddy Pineiro With 4-Year, $17M Extension

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The San Francisco 49ers finally fixed their kicking problem. The front office officially signed Eddy Pineiro to a four-year, $17 million contract extension on Saturday, locking in the NFL’s most accurate kicker through the 2029 season. The deal guarantees Pineiro a massive $10 million.

    From Off-the-Street to Automatic

General Manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan made this their top offseason priority. After Robbie Gould retired following the 2022 season, the 49ers cycled through options. They spent a third-round pick on Jake Moody in 2023, but Moody stumbled out of the gate in 2025, hitting just 1-of-3 attempts in Week 1 against the eventual Super Bowl champion Seahawks. His ankle injury compounded the disaster. The 49ers cut him, scooped Pineiro off the free-agent market, and never looked back.

Pineiro simply didn’t miss when it mattered. He drilled 28 of his 29 field goal attempts for an NFL-best 96.6% success rate. His lone miss came from an absurd 64 yards out. You could almost feel the collective sigh of relief from the Levi’s Stadium faithful every time Pineiro lined up for a kick this past season. The undrafted former soccer player brought a calm, clinical energy to a high-stress position.

“Signing this deal means the world to me and my family. I’m incredibly thankful to the coaches and the entire organization for believing in me and trusting me to continue this journey with you.”

Special Teams Overhaul / What’s Next

Lynch is aggressively securing the core of his special teams. Earlier this week, the 49ers inked 40-year-old veteran long snapper Jon Weeks to a one-year, $1.49 million extension. Now, the spotlight shifts to the punting game. Thomas Morstead enters free agency after a solid 2025 campaign where he averaged 43.6 yards per punt. Expect Lynch to hit the phones immediately to bring Morstead back and keep the kicking trio intact for a deep playoff run next winter.
