KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs are not waiting for the market to open to clean up their special teams room. Just 24 hours after securing Tyquan Thornton, the Chiefs agreed to a contract extension with wide receiver and return specialist Nikko Remigio late Tuesday night, according to his representation at Equity Sports.
Preseason Flash vs. Regular Season Reality
Remigio hit the 2026 offseason as an exclusive-rights free agent, meaning Kansas City held all the cards. General manager Brett Veach decided not to let the former undrafted free agent test the waters, locking him onto the 90-man roster ahead of Organized Team Activities.
The speedster faces an uphill battle to keep his spot on the final 53-man roster. He built a reputation as a preseason superstar over the last two years, only to cool off when the games actually mattered.
During the 2024 preseason, Remigio torched coverage units with a 33.25-yard kickoff return average. Once the regular season hit, that number fell to 26.82 yards per return, alongside a quiet 9.45 yards on punts. The 2025 campaign told the exact same story. He exploded for 38.5 yards per return in August exhibitions, but managed only 25.55 yards across 29 regular-season kickoff returns. His punt return efficiency plummeted to just 7.64 yards.
You can feel the urgency inside Arrowhead Stadium. If you occupy a roster spot solely to return kicks, you need to break games wide open. Remigio has been reliable, but he hasn’t been electric in December and January.

Playoff Implications / What’s Next
This signing is a depth move, but it signals how Veach views the back end of his receiver room. The Chiefs struggled to find consistent production outside of Travis Kelce last season. By securing Thornton and Remigio early, Kansas City sets a baseline.
However, the heavy lifting is far from over. The returning core of Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and 2025 draft pick Jalen Royals offers potential, but it lacks proven veteran dominance. With Hollywood Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster hitting unrestricted free agency as the new league year opens today, the Chiefs have a glaring void to fill. They cannot roll into the 2026 season relying solely on their current depth chart. Look for Kansas City to aggressively target a starting-caliber playmaker in the coming days or use premium draft capital to arm Patrick Mahomes with a true difference-maker.
