HENDERSON, Nev. — The Las Vegas Raiders refused to let free agency dictate their timeline. Instead of entering a bidding war on Monday, general manager John Spytek struck a late-night deal Sunday, acquiring veteran cornerback Taron Johnson from the Buffalo Bills and saving the former All-Pro from the open market.

Flipping the Script in the Secondary

Las Vegas sends a 2026 sixth-round pick to Buffalo in exchange for Johnson and a 2026 seventh-round selection. The Bills openly planned to cut the 29-year-old slot corner this weekend to clear salary cap space and fit new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard’s 3-4 scheme. The Raiders read the room, jumped the line, and secured an elite defender for pennies on the dollar.

Johnson brings instant aggression to a Raiders secondary that looked entirely lost during the 2025 campaign. While a nagging groin injury limited him to 13 games last season recording 57 tackles and 4 pass breakups—his 2023 Second-Team All-Pro tape proves he still possesses top-tier instincts. Following the massive void left by Thursday’s blockbuster trade sending Maxx Crosby to the Ravens, Las Vegas desperately needed a veteran presence to anchor the back end. You could almost feel the collective sigh of relief from the Raiders’ coaching staff when the paperwork cleared.

“We needed a dog in the slot. Taron bled for Buffalo for eight years, and now he brings that exact same grit to the desert. We aren’t sitting around waiting for the draft; we’re reloading right now.”
    — Rob Leonard, Defensive Coordinator, Las Vegas Raiders

    Playoff Implications / What’s Next

This acquisition radically shifts the Raiders’ entire offseason blueprint. By locking down a premium slot defender at a manageable $8.67 million cap hit for 2026, Las Vegas avoids burning early draft capital on the secondary. Spytek can now hyper-focus the front office on finding a premier edge rusher to replace Crosby, or inject raw talent into an offense preparing for life after Geno Smith.

For Buffalo, the fire sale blazes on. Moving Johnson signals a complete teardown of the defensive core that defined the Sean McDermott era. The Bills eat the dead cap, swallow their pride, and look toward a painful rebuild in western New York.
