WASHINGTON — The Washington Commanders community and the Landon School are reeling today following the sudden death of former Pro Bowl offensive lineman Tre’ Johnson. The 54-year-old, known for his punishing physicality in the trenches and his gentle guidance in the classroom, died unexpectedly on Sunday, February 15, during a family trip.
Johnson’s wife, Irene, confirmed the devastating news on social media, sparking an outpouring of grief from former teammates, students, and fans who remember him as a giant both on the field and in his second life as an educator.
A Force in the Trenches
Washington selected Johnson out of Temple University with the 31st overall pick in the 1994 NFL Draft, and he immediately brought a nasty streak to the offensive line. Standing 6-foot-2 and weighing over 320 pounds, Johnson wasn’t just big; he was a road grader.
He spent the bulk of his nine-year career in D.C. (1994-2000, 2002), anchoring the line during a transitional era for the franchise. His standout season came in 1999, where his dominance at guard earned him a Pro Bowl selection. That year, he helped power an offense that led Washington to a 10-6 record and an NFC East title.
Though injuries plagued his later years—limiting him to just a handful of games between 2000 and 2002, including a brief one-season stop with the Cleveland Browns in 2001—Johnson’s peak performance left a lasting mark. He played with a leverage and intensity that defined the “Hogs” legacy, even as the team moved into a new era.
From the Gridiron to the Classroom
While his NFL stats are etched in the record books, Johnson’s “second act” was arguably more impactful. After hanging up his cleats, he traded the playbook for history textbooks, joining the faculty at the Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland.
For years, Johnson served as a history teacher and mentor. Students didn’t just see an ex-NFL player; they saw an educator who cared deeply about their development. Recently, health issues forced him to take a leave of absence, a struggle his family kept private until now.
“It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that my husband, Tre’ Johnson, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly… His four children, Chloe, EJ, EZ and Eden, extended family, friends, and I are devastated and in shock.”

“Tre was one of the smartest players I’ve ever met or covered. The conversations always veered away from football… RIP Big smarty.”

What’s Next
The Washington Commanders are expected to hold a moment of silence or a tribute in Johnson’s honor. For the Landon School, the loss is immediate and profound. Grief counselors will likely be on hand this week as students return to a classroom missing its largest presence. Johnson is survived by his wife Irene and their four children: Chloe, EJ, EZ, and Eden.
