BALTIMORE — The opening days of NFL free agency usually bring surprises, but Tuesday night delivered an absolute shockwave. Thirteen hours after agreeing to send two first-round picks to the Las Vegas Raiders for superstar pass rusher Maxx Crosby, the Baltimore Ravens pulled the plug. Crosby failed his physical due to long-term concerns over his surgically repaired knee. Baltimore immediately changed course, signing former Bengals terror Trey Hendrickson to a four-year, $112 million contract.

    A $112 Million Plan B

You could almost feel the whiplash in the front office. General Manager Eric DeCosta watched his massive swing for Crosby dissolve over a medical exam. Instead of panicking, the Ravens secured Hendrickson. The 31-year-old edge rusher commands $60 million in fully guaranteed money. Best of all for Baltimore? They keep their 2026 and 2027 first-round picks.

Hendrickson brings a ferocious resume to the AFC North rivalry. He posted 17.5 sacks in both 2023 and 2024. Now, he gets two guaranteed shots every season at his former quarterback, Joe Burrow. The guaranteed cash speaks louder than any lingering awkwardness from his Cincinnati exit.

“You bring the player in, you try to get as much information as you can. We did that, and we were not able to complete the process of acquiring the player, based on our assessment of the situation.”
    — Eric DeCosta, Ravens General Manager

    The Vegas Hangover

Las Vegas faces a massive headache. The Raiders expected a draft haul to rebuild their roster around expected No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza. Now, they welcome back a star who just watched his ticket to a contender vanish. Crosby reported to the facility at 6 a.m. Wednesday, honoring his contract. Yet, other teams now know Baltimore’s medical staff flagged his knee. That medical grade torches his immediate trade value.

Indianapolis Bets Big on Daniel Jones

The quarterback dominoes fell in unexpected directions. The Colts backed themselves into a corner after Anthony Richardson demanded a trade. With a thin draft class and no first-round picks to maneuver, Indianapolis handed Daniel Jones a historic two-year, $88 million contract. The deal includes $50 million fully guaranteed this season.

Jones tore his Achilles in December 2025. He claims he will return by Week 1. The Colts essentially bet their entire 2026 season on a rapid rehabilitation. The pressure in Indianapolis just spiked, especially after losing offensive line staples to the open market.

    Playoff Implications / What’s Next

Baltimore retained its draft capital while solving a desperate need for edge rushing. Hendrickson perfectly fits defensive coordinator Jesse Minter’s aggressive scheme. For the Raiders, general manager John Spytek must decide whether to force a repair with Crosby or accept a discounted trade package from a desperate contender. The AFC West dynamic shifted, then snapped right back to its original state.

Meanwhile, the Buffalo Bills scrambled to respond. Buffalo locked up Bradley Chubb on a three-year, $29 million deal, hoping his health holds up. The interior offensive line market exploded, with Tyler Linderbaum securing a massive payday from the Raiders, stripping Baltimore of their reliable center. Expect the Bills to aggressively target the remaining safety and linebacker markets to patch up Jim Leonhard’s new defensive unit.
