Texans Shell Out $40M for Hunter as NFL Roster Reset Hits Overdrive

HOUSTON — The Houston Texans sent a clear message to the rest of the AFC on Thursday: their window to win is wide open. General Manager Nick Caserio finalized a massive one-year, $40.1 million extension for star defensive end Danielle Hunter, keeping the pass rusher in H-Town through the 2027 season. The deal includes a staggering $30.7 million signing bonus, rewarding a veteran who spearheaded the league’s top-ranked defense last year.

    Houston Secures the Edge

Hunter isn’t the only one staying put in Houston. Right tackle Trent Brown reached an agreement on a one-year deal worth up to $7 million to remain a primary protector for the offense. With DeMeco Ryans also finalizing his coaching staff for the 2026 campaign, the Texans are leaning into continuity. Hunter’s 15-sack performance in 2025 proved he hasn’t lost a step, and his new $40.1 million average salary places him among the four highest-paid edge defenders in the game.

The energy at NRG Stadium was electric during the team’s playoff run last January, and this move ensures that the “Sack City” duo of Hunter and Will Anderson Jr. remains the most feared tandem in the league. You could feel the shift in the city’s sports culture last year; keeping Hunter is the definitive “win-now” move fans were begging for.

Seahawks and Rams Lock Down Core Veterans

The defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks aren’t letting their defensive identity slip away either. Linebacker Drake Thomas, an undrafted success story who blossomed into a 14-game starter, agreed to a new two-year, $8 million contract. The deal has incentives that could push the total value to $9 million, a well-earned raise for a player who racked up 96 tackles and 3.5 sacks during Seattle’s title defense.

In Los Angeles, the Rams are betting on loyalty and leadership. Despite an injury-riddled 2025, 11-year veteran tight end Tyler Higbee signed a two-year extension worth up to $8 million. Higbee is already the franchise’s all-time leader for tight ends in catches and yards. Keeping him in the locker room provides much-needed stability for Sean McVay’s squad as they look to re-tool for another deep January run.

“This team believed in me when I came over in free agency, and I wasn’t going anywhere. We have unfinished business in Houston, and that starts with the guys in this room and the culture Coach Ryans has built.”

    Quick Hits Across the League

    • San Francisco 49ers: Kyle Shanahan added veteran experience to his staff, hiring former Bears head coach Matt Eberflus as the assistant head coach of defense.
    • Pittsburgh Steelers: The front office officially moved on from tight end Jonnu Smith, releasing the veteran after a 38-catch season in 2025.
    • New York Jets: The Jets re-signed tight end Jelani Woods and secured the rights to interior disruptor Jowon Briggs and linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Ball via exclusive rights tenders.
    • Las Vegas Raiders: Exclusive rights free agents Will Putnam (C) and Charles Snowden (DE) were both tendered and will return to the silver and black.
    • Washington Commanders: Drake Jackson is staying in D.C. after reaching an extension. The former second-round pick looked sharp in limited action late last season and will be a key rotational piece in Dan Quinn’s defense.

Playoff Implications and What is Next

The massive investment in Hunter signals that Houston expects to be the primary challenger to the Chiefs and Seahawks for the 2026 throne. By front-loading the signing bonus, the Texans maintain flexibility for a looming extension for Will Anderson Jr. elsewhere, the Seahawks’ retention of Drake Thomas suggests they are prioritizing young, homegrown talent to keep their championship window propped open. As the new league year officially begins on March 11, expect a flurry of activity as teams under the salary cap floor begin to weaponize their remaining space.
